Drift is one of the Autobots introduced in “Transformers: Age of Extinction”, and transforms into a 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R in “Transformers: The Last Knight”, instead of a Bugatti Veryon, which was his previous form. His Deluxe Class toy also similarly transforms into a Mercedes, in case you were wondering if he was just a red recolour – he’s actually a significant retool of the first Deluxe Class toy! But anyway, back to Legion Class Drift. It’s not confirmed yet if he’ll be a Triple Changer, but I sure hope he will be!
Drift is a Legion Class figure, which means he retails for SGD$11.90 at all good department stores and Toys R Us. Thank you, Hasbro, for sending him over!
Packaging
He’s got new artwork on the card, although I’m not sure if it’s the same one that will be on his Deluxe Class toys. I think the red is pretty striking and makes him stand out more than when he was blue. Also, I’m hoping that we have an explanation about why he’s red now! Was it a fashion choice? A terrible battle? Or was it because Sqweeks is blue, so they didn’t want to have two blue Transformers running around?
Alternate Mode
I have a soft spot for Transformers that turn into Mercedes (which also includes Soundwave and Wheeljack), so Drift automatically gets bumped up my list. While he previously went from a blue robot to a blue car, this time he transforms from a red robot into a black car. I personally think this is an infinitely wiser choice than transforming into a red car, partially because this would also step on Hot Rod’s toes. Plus, he looks incredibly sleek and classy as a black Mercedes, even though he’s so tiny.
I’m contemplating getting a second Drift just because he’s a Mercedes, which also indicates to you what might have happened with Soundwave for me. However, most of his robot mode can be seen if you turn him over, which is unlikely since his wheels roll and fit together pretty well.
Robot Mode
In robot mode, his red and black form don’t look quite as much like a traditional samurai anymore. He looks more like a modern samurai, or a robot samurai (which he technically he is). He retains his head sculpt, which again is pretty detailed for a figure that’s so small.
Personally I’m a little torn between red or blue Drift as blue is my favourite colour (such a bimbotic reason, I know) but red looks more stylish.
So, should you get Drift’s Legion Class figure? Of course.
He doesn’t have a Legion Class version of him around, and you know you want a Legion Class Drift so that he can ride Slug (whom he’s partnered with in “Transformers: Age of Extinction”). I’m just waiting for Hound and Crosshairs to be out so I can have all the Legion Class Autobots riding the Dinobots in a long awaited “Transformers: Age of Extinction” scene.
