Next in my Liokaiser review, I’m going to check out Fellbat, who is a retool of Skydive. He transforms into a fighter jet that is a cross between an F16 and an F18. He is based on Hellbat from Transformers: Victory. I guess “Hell” is not a kosher word for a child’s toy, so they’ve changed one letter to make it Fellbat. Interestingly, this works!
In this series, ie Transformers: Combiner Wars, Liokaiser is formed from a team of Destrons. It is a homage to Liokaiser from the Transformers: Victory, where the team that formed Liokaiser was called Breastforce. Yes. Breastforce.
Liokaiser retails for $199.90 and is available at all good departmental stores. Thanks Hasbro for sending him over!
Alternate Mode
Fellbat looks almost exactly like his G1 self, right down to that obiang yellow section on his wings! I still can’t get over how much he looks like his younger self. The purple is a nice deep dark colour, but everything from the black cone to that silver stripe on his tail fin screams Hellbat. You don’t even have to see his robot mode to know who he is. It’s amazing how close he looks to the original.
I really like those two tiny moulded-in missiles that Skydive has. It hearkens back to, well, simpler days, and is a simple touch that brings so much more to the character.
Robot Mode
In robot mode, Fellbat’s two bat wings on the side of his head can be folded in and out. They look even more anime accurate than the toy does, and you can almost hear him do that ridiculous chant that’s really just gibberish just by seeing his face. Hellbat had a pretty unique head/look (that was kind of like an upgraded version of Mindwipe), and this mould captures it very accurately.
Beyond that, I’d say he’s more anime accurate than toy accurate. Which is great, because I don’t think anyone actually kept their Hellbat in robot mode, right? You’d keep him as part of Lio Kaiser.
Accessories
He comes with one more gun that’s Fellbat’s sole armament. Then again, Fellbat doesn’t need it – he hypnotises his foes, remember?
So here’s Fellbat for you! He and Guyhawk are the two bros who look the most like their G1 selves, and they’re the ones who really seal the deal for you. And of course, Liokaiser’s final, combined form!
