So today I’ll be looking at Drillhorn from the Liokaiser giftset in Transformers: Combiner Wars. Drillhorn transforms into a drill tank (do drill tanks exist in real life that look like this?), and he is a retool of Brawl from the Combaticons.
In this series, ie Transformers: Combiner Wars, Liokaiser is formed from a team of Destrons. It is a homage to Liokaiser from the Transformers: Victory, where the team that formed Liokaiser was called Breastforce. Yes. Breastforce.
Liokaiser retails for $199.90 and is available at all good departmental stores. Thanks Hasbro for sending him over!
Alternate Mode
While his drill is definitely useful as an offensive weapon, I’m not entirely sure if it can actually drill through the ground and tunnel underground, in the sense that the drill is much smaller than the body. Perhaps he’s more of a war machine than a construction vehicle, as the rest of the Destrons are. I like the deep purple colours though, they give him this sense of menace without looking too cartoony.
The treads don’t move, unfortunately, but the addition of the black gun gives him even more firepower and emphasises the offensive aspect of his vehicle mode. So OK, well, maybe he is more of a military machine than a construction vehicle.
Robot Mode
Drillhorn looks suitably imposing with his big burly upper arms and stocky figure, as does Brawl. Instead of his purple serving as highlights, the way his colour scheme is done makes it look like the grey is part of the highlights instead. It’s also a dark enough shade (the grey) that it looks metallic, without being silvery.
If there’s any Decepticon that would be a thug, it would be Drillhorn. I mean, just look at his appearance! He seems ready to pick a fight with the Autobots anytime.
Accessories
He’s got an extra gun so that makes him even more well-armed. He’s got both a melee weapon (the drill) and a ranged weapon, so again, that emphasises his thuggish, brutish nature even more.
Check out his new head sculpt! It’s got a flippable horn.
I like the brutish, thuggish look that Drillhorn has that differentiates him from his other team mates. Well, Ironbison also has that sort of look but he’s more of a rugby player feel than a thug. Overall, I think he’s a good use of the Brawl mould that has its own character.
If you’ve noticed that my pictures look different, hooray! I’m trying out a new light tent set up and I’ve also gotten a new prosumer camera. The pictures are a little dark but hey they’re a huge improvement over previous ones imho. Let me know if you’ve got any toy photography tips (that don’t cost a bomb)!
