And here’s Dezarus from the Liokaiser giftset, the leader of the Destrons! He transforms into a space shuttle, and is a homage to Deathsaurus from Transformers: Victory. For obvious reasons, his name can’t be used (since it has the word “death”, and two other Destron members went through a name change because they had the words “hell” and “kill”) (gosh, Transformers: Victory was pretty violent with the names eh?), so it’s a semi-literal pronunciation of his name.
Dezarus has had many variant spellings over the years, with Deszaras, Deathsaurus, and Death Sanras (what is a Sanras?) which was how Singapore spelt it in the 80s. He was the Decepticon Emperor of Destruction for Transformers: Victory, and probably the third most powerful character there.
Dezarus is a retool of Sky Lynx, and forms the main body of Liokaiser. He looks quite… adorable, actually.
In this series, ie Transformers: Combiner Wars, Liokaiser is formed from a team of Destrons. It is a homage to Liokaiser from the Transformers: Victory, where the team that formed Liokaiser was called Breastforce.
Liokaiser retails for $199.90 and is available at all good departmental stores. Thanks Hasbro for sending him over!
Alternate Mode
Dezarus’ colour scheme takes its cue mostly from Leozack, the original leader of the team that forms Liokaiser. So it’s a teal sort of green, and certainly would not pass off as a robot in disguise. No matter how his head transforms, you can’t help but see the eyes too – making him look like a giant bird/dragon who’s trying to emulate the shape of a plane.
It’s too adorable. He tries his hardest to look like a plane, and you just want to convince him that yes, his disguise works. Perhaps without the cockpit, his colour scheme might look like believable, but remember that he’s a space shuttle too. Dezarus really tries his best to be a good Transformer.
This is the most convincing angle where Dezarus looks like a space shuttle. However, since they’re going for the Leozack homage, he’s got the yellow stripes on the wings. I think it’s the best of both worlds, and we must remember this Dezarus is his own character and not Deathsaurus or Leozack.
Robot Mode
Dezarus transforms into a winged dinosaur, or in this case, a dragon. Actually, because his form has no real world analogue, he transforms into a kaiju – a perfect callback to his Deathsaurus origins! While Sky Lynx looked fierce, Deathsaurus looks adorable, because the painted mouth makes him look like he has a golden beak. His eyes might be narrow and angry but they don’t look threatening enough to scare. In fact, he looks like a small pet that you might have.
Don’t let your real pets get to him though.
That teal tail! Too cute.
Accessories
The original Liokaiser wielded a teal-grey Electromagnetic Nunchaku in his battles with Star Saber (and then Victory Saber), which could be swung around or straightened into a javelin. As a homage to that, Dezarus’ sword rifles are coloured similarly, and can be configured into an approximation of the Electromagnetic Nunchaku. The stock images show him pegging it onto his shoulders, but you can always let him wield it as a deadly weapon.
To be honest, I wasn’t sure if using the Sky Lynx mould for Dezarus/Leozack would work out, but it’s actually a really cute choice and an interesting repurposing of a very unique transformation. Dezarus is one of the surprise hits of the Destron team, and would be a perfectly viable toy if sold by himself.
Next week, I check out Liokaiser himself in all his glory!
