Should you watch it, wiki it, or wait for the recap? Watch it.

Caroline tries to get Max to be more business minded by enrolling her in a business seminar, but ends up arguing with her when they want to take the cupcake shop in different directions. Will the girls be able to settle their differences, or is this the end of Max’s Homemade Cupcakes?

“And the Brand Job” is the fifth episode of the fourth season of 2 Broke Girls. It’s a future looking episode that puts the girls one step closer to their liberation of poverty by advancing their (eventually) successful cupcake business. It takes place mostly in a different set, that of a hotel seminar room, and it’s a welcome change from the usual diner/apartment scenes.

Of note, this really lets the relationship between Max and Caroline shine. They argue and predictably make up by the end, but it also shows how different they are and hence, why they’re so funny when they’re together. Heck, they’re funny when they’re alone too.

Highlights

New location

Although it’s a one-off (a hotel seminar room), it’s refreshing change of pace from the usual place. Plus there’s plenty of props and visual gags, and it’s a fun (or painful, depending on your mindset) reminder of all those silly workplace seminars we’ve had to attend (and go home early from).

Focus on Max and Caroline

Not that I don’t like the supporting cast (only Oleg), but the show really delivers when it follows up on its premise – the 2 Broke Girls. We get to see more of Max and Caroline’s relationship, which is the heart of the show after all. There’s not as much character development in this episode, but we do get to see them affirm their friendship for each other.

Interesting cold open

Whenever they have fun, oddly dressed guest stars to open the diner scenes with, it’s a fun exercise in seeing how either waitress react. In this case they end up punking their snotty customers, which also brings about a cathartic relief in us – haven’t we all wanted to punk our own customers from Hell?

Letdowns

Gordon Kepper (David Hoffman) lacks comic timing

Apparently this is the second time he’s guest starred on 2 Broke Girls. He’s just not funny. He doesn’t emote properly, his lines are ill timed, and he doesn’t have that rhythm or flair with the main cast. It’s not that he’s dislikeable, it’s more that he sticks out since he’s got such a large role but such flat delivery.

“And the Brand Job” is a fun episode of 2 Broke Girls that puts them in another unusual situation which, ironically, all executives will be able to identify with. It’s always enjoyable to see the ladies doing something relatively “normal” (since it helps build that connection with regular audiences, not everyone lives under the poverty line after all, and you’re not going to be watching TV if you are), and this comedy escapes the rut that other comedies about poverty (such as Raising Hope or My Name Is Earl) frequently fall into through relatable situations.
