Caroline finds an old bicycle to do cupcake deliveries with – and discovers Max’s hidden shame, while a yarn bomber constantly thwarts their attempts. Sophie and Oleg discover their relationship no longer has the physical aspect they were looking for – will they be able to find it again?
“And the Old Bike Yarn” is the fourth episode of the fourth season of 2 Broke Girls. It takes the girls into some new locations as they learn to utilise their new bike, which allows for more active scenes (instead of the usual talking heads). There’s also a yarn bomber in the episode – a fun way to keep relevant with the times and also introduce a colourful visual element to the series.
Max is also in a position of weakness in this episode, which provides for more interesting characterisations since Max is usually the one in control. To see Max ask Caroline for help grounds the humour in character, which makes for a better episode, overall.
Highlights
Max and Caroline’s relationship
As mentioned earlier, it really stretches Max’s character when we see her in uncomfortable situations, since she’s always so used to control. Being the compliant, less powerful one in this situation helps us see a different facet of their friendship, and again shows us how far the pair have come in their cupcake business, and also personally. Max and Caroline’s differences are what brings humour to the show, but their bonding is what brings the feels to the series.
Yarn bombing lady
Her name is Guinevere (a suitably geeky name of Arthurian legend no doubt), and she brings the quirkiness to the episode that we’ve not seen in a long time. Face it, when you’re as poor as Max and Caroline, you’re bound to run into a lot of weirdos. Not only must those props have taken very long to construct, but it sure shows the amount of effort put into the set design! Also, Guinevere is neither irritating nor weak – she’s got just the right amount of sass to be a guest star.
Furthering of the cupcake business
Another step forward means another step towards the conclusion of the series (where Max and Caroline strike it big with their cupcakes), and it’s gratifying to see that the girls are making an effort to put themselves above the poverty line. It shows that their circumstances don’t always go back to status quo, which means that every bit of change has that much more impact, since it might be a change that lasts (like their cupcake stores!)
Letdowns
Sophie and Oleg are not funny anymore
Oh please. It’s tiring to see more lovemaking jokes between the two of them. Just as with the short Asian jibes at Han, this is one overplayed beat. Risqué humour runs the gamut, so why can’t we focus on someone else’s fornication for once?
“And the Old Bike Yarn” is one of the more average episodes, but it’s still worth your time to watch, even if it’s just to see Han in his cycling get up. Or Max in her cycling get down.
