Every month, we’ll tell you about new television shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore! We’ll also highlight shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.
Overview of September shows
If you can’t get enough of Marvel’s television shows (which we sorely need), then you’re in luke because Luke Cage premieres at the end of the month! One Punch Man comes to Animax, and History has several programmes focused on Malaysia. It’s a mixed bag of shows this month favouring pop culture fans!
Luke Cage on Netflix (30 Sep)
A hoodie-wearing, unbreakable ex-con fights to clear his name and save his neighborhood. He wasn’t looking for a fight, but the people need a hero.
If you’ve been following the Netflix Marvel shows (“Jessica Jones” and “Daredevil”) then you’ll have already seen Luke Cage’s debut. What’s great about Luke Cage is that he’s a superhero who’s legitimately African-American, rather than taking an existing superhero’s name and slapping it on someone of a different gender and/or race just to add diversity for the sake of it. His introduction in “Jessica Jones” means that audiences will have already eased up to him, and we might even get to see cameos from other Marvel characters in his solo series!
10 Things We Love About Malaysians on History (4 Sep, Sundays 8.00 pm)
This show celebrates the traits and behaviours that make us truly Malaysians. Malaysians live in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual society. A true melting pot of cultures, food, traditions and languages that is very unique. From delicious mixed cuisines to quirky habits, you are sure to find that Malaysians are a unique hybrid. What is so great about Malaysians? Let’s uncover the lovable idiosyncrasies of typical Malaysians.
“10 Things We Love About Malaysians on History” sounds just like clickbait transformed into a television series. Notwithstanding the title, it’ll be fun to see a show that celebrates Malaysians of all stripes and discovers what makes them lovable. You might even find some new food stalls in Kuala Lumpur to patronise if you watch closely!
Drinking Solo on Viu (6 Sep)
This story depicts people drinking alcohol alone for different reasons and the romance between Jung-Suk and Shin-Ib. Jung-Suk is an arrogant, but popular instructor and Shin-Ib is a rookie instructor. She struggles to survive in the private institute world.
There’s just something about seeing individuals that are so damaged that they need to seek out escapism on their own. And that’s exactly what Jung-Suk and Shin-Ib are, if they’re “Drinking Solo.” What makes it even more touching is when two such damaged individuals find love in the form of each other’s arms, which is what this drama will have you rooting for.
