Every month, we’ll tell you what upcoming movies are screening in cinemas islandwide, and which are the ones that you must watch.

Overview of September’s releases

There’s almost one animated film per week to look forward to in September, ranging from light-hearted (“The Secret Life of Pets”) to poignant (“Kubo and the Two Strings”). You’ve got more romances and science fiction films this month, but no tent-pole superhero movie (giving us all a breather to catch up on those films we’ve missed). The highlight of the month is “Blair Witch,” with its short but terrifying sojourn into the forest of a horrifying witch.

War Dogs (1 September)

Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

“War Dogs” is the story of two underdogs, albeit incredibly illegal underdogs. What makes “War Dogs” such a endearing film, despite the inherent immorality, is that they try so hard to make their company work. You have to applaud the enthusiasm they have for making it all work despite the odds stacked against them.

Blair Witch (15 September)

It’s been 20 years since James’s sister and her two friends vanished into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland while researching the legend of the Blair Witch, leaving a trail of theories and suspicions in their wake. James (James Allen McCune) and his friends Peter (Brandon Scott), Ashley (Corbin Reid) and film student Lisa (Callie Hernandez) venture into the same woods each with a camera to uncover the mysteries surrounding their disappearance. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry) offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods. But as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

“Blair Witch” is the scariest film to have come out this year, even topping “The Conjuring 2” and “The Boy.” Once the tension starts, it’ll grip you all the way to the end. Sure, the shaky camera might be disorienting at first, but once you’re engrossed you’ll be unable to tear your eyes from the screen and yet terrified at watching what will happen next. The Blair Witch was a terror, and almost 20 years later, she’s still just as terrifying.

Storks. (Warner Bros Pictures)

Storks (22 September)

Storks deliver babies… or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop—in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.

Storks represent purity (with their whiteness) and life (delivering babies), making them one of the most inspiring symbols to be turned into animated characters. And the premise of the film sees the once glorious storks being turned into delivery drones, so there’s already this backstory that will have you rooting for the protagonist to succeed (and perhaps bring glory back to his species). The fate of mankind and birdkind rests on Junior’s shoulders.
