I recommend weekly 2-hour sessions, although
All levels?
Yes.
Why?
I personally think that each level has its own challenges, and that one level is not necessarily “more difficult” than another level. If you’ve tried teaching existentialism to a Year 6 student or personification to a Primary 4 student, you’ll find that neither is “more difficult” than the other. There are more Primary level tutors because the subjects are tested at a more basic level, but knowledge and proficiency in a subject does not equate to better teaching. You could be brilliant in a field but a lousy teacher (I’m sure you’ve had a terrible university professor before).
Private tuition must be customised to a student, and the student must be comfortable with the teaching style of the tutor. I think that is a special rapport that is difficult to develop. That amount of customisation, preparation and development requires a lot of time outside of a class, to benefit the student as much as possible.
At any time, if a student feels that he or she is not benefitting, I would recommend quitting. I would rather a student learns well with a teacher than to stick with a teacher that doesn’t help a child to improve his or her grades.
What do you do during a session?
I will go through the student’s homework and assist in assignments or projects (such as the Individual Task or Extended Essay). From time to time, depending on the student’s strengths, I will also assign additional homework that is customised to address the areas that they need to improve in.
I do require students to complete compositions or other assignments outside of class – meaning that there will be homework from time to time.
I will also go to a location of your choice.
Do you use materials from tuition centres that you have worked at before?
Good heavens, no. Please don’t ask me for that.
However, if you would like me to go through materials that you have already procured, I will do so.
How do I get in touch?
You can email me at marcus.goh@write-handed.com.
Before you commit, I would recommend a trial session of 2 hours where the student brings along his or her most recent homework for an assessment and evaluation of strengths and weaknesses. I will also test the student’s ability.
After the trial session, I will present my analysis of the student’s ability to the parent (and the student, if he or she so wishes). At this point, I will let the parent know if I think I can benefit the student. I would also like the student to take a week to think about whether he or she is comfortable with my style of teaching.
I have conducted trial sessions where I told the parent that I did not think I was a suitable person to teach the child, and recommended other solutions, so yes – I don’t think I can help everyone, and I’ll be upfront about it.
A trial session is $250 (2 hours). I’ll go to a location of your choice.
