Should you watch it, wiki it, or wait for the recap? Watch it.
Max and Caroline get a chance to appear on Kim Kardashian’s reality TV show, but it ends with a life changing decision for Caroline. Meanwhile, Han’s new $4 toast idea meets with derision from his crew. Will the girls get to meet Kim Kardashian, and will anyone ever listen to Han?
“And the Reality Problem” is the first episode of the fourth season of 2 Broke Girls, which also makes it the season premiere. The 4th season! I can’t believe 2 Broke Girls has been around for so long (can you?). Even Oleg makes a reference to that later on in the show. For a comedy with a pretty absurd premise, this has marked Caroline Channing’s fourth year of poverty.
This episode didn’t feature so much over the top lewd humour, but more incredibly suggestive (but nothing said explicitly) jokes that evoked the same kind of images, but with a bit more thinking involved. It also involves the entire cast at the girls’ house (something we don’t often see!), and it looks like there aren’t any new sets for this season! Yet.
Highlights
References to Tinder
One of the smaller subplots involves Sophie’s new way of meeting mates through Tinder (and hopefully this becomes a season long thing). It’s always appreciated to see shows making an effort to acknowledge the technology around them (don’t you hate shows that pretend social media doesn’t exist?) and it’s one step up to incorporate them into the plot of the episode. Kudos, 2 Broke Girls!
Han’s toast joke
The best part is that it keeps getting thrown out in the most unexpected moments. Of course, Han’s repeated fantasies about putting the toast in his mouth clearly reference his lack of masculinity, and when it gets paid off for the second or third time, it’s yet another barrel of unexpected laughs.
Caroline’s new hairstyle
Is this the season for blonde comedy actresses to cut their hair? I liked Caroline long tresses though – they were one of her defining differences from Max. Still, it’s a refreshing new look for her, and maybe it means Max will have long hair!
Letdowns
Oleg is even more useless
Let me state it right now – Oleg is not funny. He doesn’t have comic timing, he’s too dislikeable to pull off any joke, and his plots are always one note worthless stories about his sexuality or lack of it thereof. In this episode, he becomes even more useless. He can’t even cook (which is his occupation). He takes hours just to toast a loaf of bread properly. If he can’t even fulfill the function he was brought on for, I think we should just axe Oleg. He’s a disgusting mess of a character.
Kim Kardashian’s not funny
She’s not a comedian, true. I did still expect some sort of joke or laughs from her though – but nope. Even the punchline she delivered at the end lacked pizzazz. I think she should just stay on her own show – can we use the budget for better looking cupcakes please?
“And the Reality Problem” is a great episode, but it wasn’t good enough as a season premiere. Still, it provided moments for all our characters, so it was still a decent way to start the season.
