Every month, we’ll tell you about new comedies and dramas to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.
Overview of December’s shows
As the year comes to a close, we get a breather to catch up on all the shows that have come out in the last few months. However, horror fantasy fans will be thrilled with Dracula and the second season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina coming out on Netflix this month (shouldn’t they have come out nearer to Halloween though?). Superhero fans can delight in the fifth season of Legends of Tomorrow on Warner TV, which also concludes the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. For Korean drama buffs, The Game: Towards Midnight on both OhK! and Viu will be an interesting one to look out for.
Dracula (4 Jan)
Netflix
Dracula is a retelling of the tale of Dracula and his battle with the Van Helsings across generations. But this time, it will show Dracula in a whole new vulnerable light. Created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, who did the esteemed Sherlock series, the series promises to give us a fresh new Dracula for 2020. Stars Claes Bang, John Hefferman, and Dolly Wells.
There’s very little to excite in the story of Dracula, because there’s only so far you can stray when it comes to adaptation of classic tales. What’s more interesting is the style of this new Dracula show, since it’s likely to take on the same sensibilities that made Sherlock so popular. Will this Dracula be one for the ages?
Legends of Tomorrow (Season 5) (22 Jan, Wednesdays 9.50pm)
Warner TV (StarHub TV CH 515, Singtel TV CH 306)
Legends of Tomorrow focuses on the exploits of a group of time-travelling superheroes who are often called upon to safeguard the integrity of history and the current timeline. Its fifth season opens with the conclusion to the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, and deals with the ramifications of the fourth season’s ending — a demon-possessed teammate, a bevy of magical creatures forced to stay on a time-travelling spaceship, as well as an infernal menace who wants death and destruction. It’s up to this group of quirky heroes to make sure that time as we know it doesn’t change… too much. Stars Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Dominic Purcell, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers.
Legends of Tomorrow really hit their wacky stride in Season 3, and they’ve kept up their groove (while still retaining the drama and suspense of a good television series) in Season 4. It looks like this is set to continue in Season 5, but what’s more exciting is seeing how Crisis on Infinite Earths will end in the season’s first episode! Plus, there’s always the charm of seeing legendary historical characters re-interpreted as less-than-savoury fellows in the series, as well as the surprisingly charming relationship between Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan).
The Game: Towards Midnight
23 Jan, Thursday and Fridays 7.50pm, Oh!K (Singtel TV CH 525/611, StarHub TV CH 816)
23 Jan, Viu
In The Game: Towards Midnight, a handsome, rich, and smart prophet of death meets a detective who is immune to his powers — the prophet can’t seem to see when she’ll die. The duo team up to solve crimes and unravel mysteries, especially when a rash of serial murders hits the streets. But can they solve the biggest mystery of them all? Stars Ok Taec-yeon and Lee Yeon-hee.
A prophet who can see how people will die by giving an intense, smouldering stare? That sounds like a recipe for a love story, which is probably what the romance in this series will centre around. Of course, since the prophet can’t see the detective’s death, it means that this will most likely end in the tragic demise of one of them — but not before they engage in several rounds of melodrama for sure.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Season 2 Part 1) (24 Jan)
Netflix
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina revolves around the titular teenage witch and her magical family. Following the revelations of the previous season’s finale, Sabrina and her friends must deal with the new status quo and a new ruler of Hell, as well as devising a plan to rescue their friend, Nick, from his fate as a prison for a powerful evil force. Stars Kiernan Shipka, Ross Lynch, Lucy Davis, and Chance Perdomo.
The previous season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ended in a pretty exciting finale, so it’s hard to see how this season will top the stakes of the previous. Still, the focus of the series has always been on magic in the modern, non-magical world, and how witches live with us foolish mortals. It’ll be fun to see what other supernatural threats Sabrina and friends will have to deal with, although hopefully it won’t go down the same path of Supernatural‘s baddies.
