Overview of February’s shows

Channel 5 enters February with a bang, with a slew of new local dramas: Titoudao: Inspired by the True Story of a Wayang Star, In The Wind, and Derek 2 (on meWATCH). But Netflix is no slouch other, bringing joy to all middle-aged Pokemon Trainers with Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, as well as a new season of Altered Carbon. Kdrama fans can look forward to Tell Me What You Saw on both Viu and Hub Drama First, as well as When Weather Is Fine on Viu.

Tell Me What You Saw
Viu – 2 Feb
Hub Drama First (StarHub Ch 860) – 10 Feb

After losing his fiance in a terrible explosion, genius criminal profile Oh Hyun-Jae (Jang Hyuk) went into hidiing. However, he is drawn back into action when rookie detective Cha Soo-Young (Sooyoung), who has an eidetic memory, enters the fray. Together, they will seek out the serial killer that Oh Hyun-Jae has a very personal connection with.

The title looks a little shaky from the get-go, since police officers should have good (though not necessarily perfect) memories, right? It’d be a little odd to hear Oh Hyun-Jae asking Cha Soo-Young “tell me what you saw” every episode. Nevertheless, the premise seems fairly intriguing, since it hints that a tiny detail that has been in plain sight all this while will prove to be the key to unravelling a season-long mystery.

This drama series is an adaptation of acclaimed theatre director Goh Boon Teck’s eponymous play, and is based on his mother’s life as a famous Chinese opera performer. Exploring the “lost” culture of Chinese Wayang, the show traces the life of Mdm Oon Ah Chiam through the ups and downs in her career as a popular Chinese street opera actress in the 50s and 60s, leading all the way up to the 80s.

An English drama about Chinese Wayang? What better way to introduce English-speaking audiences to the (sometimes) inaccessible culture of Wayang, and learn more about this classic art form. Although it’s an adaptation of a play, its subject matter is both fresh and interesting, something that’s sometimes missing on local screens.

Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (movie) (27 Feb)
Netflix

In this remake of the original traditionally animated classic, Ash and friends encounter Mewtwo, a powerful genetically engineered Pokemon. However, its creators soon lose control of Mewtwo, and it’s up to the Pokemon Trainers to help resolve this issue — before the world is lost to Mewtwo’s devastating power.

This isn’t the first 3D-animated Pokemon movie, but it revisits a beloved classic — the first Pokemon movie. It taps on the nostalgia of those who grew up with the first generation of Pokemon (admit it, it’s been a while since you could name this many Pokemon in one trailer) and brings good quality animation with it. Plus, everyone’s really waiting for Mew to make his appearance.

Altered Carbon (Season 2) (27 Feb)
Netflix

Set in a futuristic world where human consciousnesses can be transferred between human bodies known as sleeves, Altered Carbon follows the adventures of a soldier-turned-investigator who is forced to investigate a magnate’s murder. Based on the novel of the same name.

A second season of Altered Carbon? Who would have guessed? With a slew of new cast members playing characters old and new, the series promises a whole new ballgame. Seeing Anthony Mackie as main character Takeshi Novacs will be fun, since the character was “played” by Joel Kinnaman in the first season.
