Every month, we’ll tell you about new shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.
Shadow and Bone. (Netflix)
Overview of April’s shows
April is a quieter month, but there are some gems that are premiering this month. Channel 5 debuts a new drama, Reunion, while Mind Jumpers is out on Channel 8. Someone has certainly been playing Dragonquest because there are two new shows about their iconic Slime monsters on Viu, I’ve Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years And Maxed Out My Level and That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime: The Slime Diaries. HBO has a new drama that combines the Victorian era and superhero genres, The Nevers, while Netflix has a fun little Polish comedy, Sexify, out this month.
Reunion (5 Apr, Mondays 9.30pm)
Channel 5
In 2004, a camping trip to Pulau Ubin turns tragic for teenagers Leonard, Sami, Riza and Jasmine when their friend Chris mysteriously disappears without a trace. 15 years later, Chris returns just as mysteriously in a fog of amnesia. In Reunion, a suspenseful 13-part drama, the secrets behind Chris’ disappearance and return are unraveled – secrets that the five friends will wish had remained dead and buried.
All that’s known about Channel 5’s latest drama is that it’s about a, well, Reunion. Little else is known about the plot, except that there are many secrets that these friends are keeping from each other (just like how the details of the plot is a secret). It stars Lim Kay Tong as a property developer and Peter Yu (remember him?) — which will be interesting to watch.
I’ve Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years And Maxed Out My Level (10 Apr)
Viu

Unappreciated office worker Azusa dies and finds herself reborn in a fantasy world as a with who never ages. Freed from the shackles of corporate drudgery, she decides to lead a quiet life and hunt the easiest monsters in the land — slimes. But after doing this for centuries, she’s now incredibly powerful… and it’s going to be difficult to lead a low key life anymore.
Slimes are the quintessential, lowest level monster in the RPG series Dragonquest, so it’s absolutely hilarious to see that someone took this concept and rolled with it. It looks like it’ll be a fun comedy with dollops of action, and hopefully we’ll see lots of references to famous RPGs in the series!
The Nevers (12 Apr, Mondays 9am and 10pm)
HBO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs-ODufnJ8Y
In Victorian-era London, a group of people known as the ‘Touched’ are individuals – mostly women – who manifest a wide range of abnormal abilities, from charming to disturbing. Among them, Amalia True, a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair, a brilliant young inventor, emerge as champions of this new underclass. Together, they make a home for the Touched while fighting the forces that oppose their existence. It stars Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly.
The Nevers leverages on two popular genres — superhero shows and Victorian-era dramas — to form a quirky and distinctive series that differentiates itself in an increasingly saturated world of superhero and Victorian-era dramas. It’s a gamble, but if it pays off, we might see a whole new slew of period drama superhero shows coming soon!
Shadow and Bone (23 Apr)
Netflix
Netflix continues to dominate the fantasy genre with another big budget production based on a popular fantasy franchise — Shadow and Bone. The series looks like it’ll be a coming-of-age story about a girl who struggles to find her place in society. As fantastical as the premise might be, the story is ultimately about something that we can all relate to, just that it’s enhanced with magic. The fantasy battles look like it’ll be a lot of fun though!
Sexify (28 Apr)
Netflix
In this Polish comedy, budding software developer Natalia knows a lot about programming, and very little about sex. With her friends Monika and Paulina, she embarks on a quest to better understand the mysteries of the female orgasm, build an app that will win an inter-university competition and maybe, just maybe, serve the needs of her peers.
This quirky comedy takes a surprisingly liberal look at matters of the heart (and other body parts). It’s got all the right ingredients for a riveting show — the fish out of water main character, her best buddies, and of course, a rather engaging subject matter. Perhaps this comedy is a sign that censors are loosening up on the types of shows that we can get in Singapore?
