Every month, we’ll tell you about new shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.
Overview of May’s shows
The Force is strong in May with the debut of Disney+’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Superhero fans will also be thrilled with the sixth season of Legends of Tomorrow on Warner TV and Jupiter’s Legacy on Netflix. Other interesting picks on Netflix include the second season of Love, Death & Robots and the second part of Lucifer Season 5, as well as a a bumper crop of anime with month including Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, the fourth season of Castlevania, and a new anime series called Eden. For K-drama addicts, Viu has Youth of May, Dark Hole, The Man Standing Next, No Mercy, Mission Possible (not the Tom Cruise one), and Pawn, but Doom At Your Service looks like the most interesting of the lot.
Legends of Tomorrow (Season 6) (3 May, Mondays 9pm)
Warner TV (Starhub Ch 515; Singtel 306)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxlNk_uPcLs
With Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) having been abducted by a strange energy beam at the end of the previous season, it seems that aliens are among us. Legends of Tomorrow sees the time travelling superheroes returning for a sixth season, as they deal with a sinister gameshow, being turned into animated characters, and the incursion of… aliens? The Legends also have to deal with the arrival of Bishop (Raffi Barsoumian), an antagonist who has his sights set on Sara.
Legends of Tomorrow truly embraced its wackiness in Season 5 with spoofs, parodies and homages to different genres, and Season 6 looks like it’ll be more of the same! With the addition of Constantine (Matt Ryan), the show has really developed a unique character of its own, mixing cheesiness and heroics with bona fide story arcs and fun villains. And of course, the amusing romance between Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) remains one of its most intriguing relationships.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (4 May)
Disney+
First introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the adventures of Clone Force 99 continue in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. The series sees five clone troopers with unique abilities find themselves on going on dangerous missions. And with great changes coming and the arrival of a brutal regime, it is uncertain what place this batch of clones will have in the new galactic order.
If you’re a fan of The Mandalorian, then you’ll be glad to know that Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) also appears in Star Wars: The Bad Batch! The series is a spin-off (and a sequel, of sorts) to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and takes place before the Star Wars Original Trilogy. But as the premise implies, the paradox of being unique clones seems like it would be a great metaphor for today’s world, with individuals trying to find their place in a society which prizes homogeneity.
DuckTales (Season 3) (7 May)
Disney+
The DuckTales reboot sees Uncle Scrooge and gang going on more adventures around the world after the attempted Moonlander invasion in Season 2. In this final season, a sinister group bent on world larceny seems to be watching their every move. Scrooge may be the richest duck in the world, but he may have met his match in the form of this fowl organisation.
DuckTales ended too soon, with this third season being its last. Nevertheless, it has spotlighted characters that appeared in other 90’s Disney Afternoon shows, such as Darkwing Duck, Gosalyn, Baloo, and Kit, paving the way for possible future revivals of those other beloved shows. While its Carls Barks inspired designs took a while to take hold, it will be fondly remembered as a series that wrought touching tales and hilarious moments, all while entertaining children the world over.
Jupiter’s Legacy (7 May)
Netflix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY3IAqm-gpE
The children of the first generation of superheroes now find themselves having to live up to the actions of their parents, who have protected mankind for almost a hundred years. But the world is changing quickly, and staying true to those ideals may prove to be more challenging than ever before. There will be consequences for these new superheroes, and even they may not be able to survive the coming storm.
Based on the comic book series of the same name, Jupiter’s Legacy explores a different take on superheroes, exploring what it would be like to have parents who are superheroes. It draws parallels to the scion of the rich and famous, while also being realistic about the emotional scars that come with having absentee parents. It also looks like it’ll deliver on the action and brawls between supers, which look pretty good from the trailer.
Doom At Your Service (11 May)
Viu
Web novel editor Dong Kyung finds herself diagnosed with brain cancer and openly rues her fate — causing her to attract a wish granting messenger between humans and gods, Myul Mang. They strike up a bargain, allowing Dong Kyung to have whatever what she wants, as long as she agrees to give up on her life after a hundred days.
While the wish fulfilment aspect of Doom At Your Service seems apt for a Korean melodrama (given the number of viewers who somehow expect their future spouses to be like the characters in such shows), it is hard to imagine how the budget would be able to truly keep up with the power of an omnipotent genie. The brain cancer aspect also seems a little insensitive. Nevertheless, it looks like an interesting premise with some possible philosophical discussions that will spice up the show.
Army Of The Dead (21 May)
Netflix
In a world where a zombie outbreak has ravaged Las Vegas, a former war hero is tasked with the ultimate heist — breaking into a vault that is deep in zombie territory. With nothing left to lose, he assembles a motley team of experts to break in and get out. But this may be an impossible task when they find that a group of superior zombies and a looming deadline stand in their way.
Army of the Dead is a cross between a heist film and a zombie movie, and it looks like it will be an entertaining cross between genres. It doesn’t seem to have as dark an aesthetic as Zack Snyder’s usual films, but then again, a post-apocalyptic world is probably bleak enough as it is. What’s great is how the film knows that this is an over the top premise, and isn’t afraid to lean it with things like zombie tigers.
