Every month, we’ll tell you about new television shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore! We’ll also highlight shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.

Overview of September’s shows

If you’re the geeky sort, then September is the perfect month for you. “Young Sheldon” debuts alongside the new season of “The Big Bang Theory”, as well as “Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light” which is based on a true story! Other highlights include the return of “Narcos” (though without Escobar, it’d be interesting to see how the series continues) and a new Korean drama, “Girls’ Generation 1979″… which also goes by the name, “Lingerie Girls’ Generation”.

Narcos (1 Sep)
Netflix

Now that the bloody hunt for Pablo Escobar has ended, the DEA turns its attention to the richest drug trafficking organization in the world: the Cali Cartel. Led by four powerful godfathers, this cartel operates much differently than Escobar’s, preferring to bribe government officials and keep its violent actions out of the headlines.

Admittedly, one of the biggest questions after season 2’s finale was the question of how “Narcos” would continue without one of its most important characters. However, if this season manages to overcome that hurdle (or somehow still manage to feature Pablo Escobar), then we might see “Narcos” continuing for a few more seasons.

Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light (1 Sep)
Netflix

A father and son rekindle their bond through the online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV in this live-action series based on a true story.

Previously known as “Final Fantasy XIV Daddy of Light”, it’s exciting to finally see a drama about MMORPGs. It’s obvious that the game will be used as a metaphor for the father-son relationship, which is interesting given that it appears that either father or son will be playing a feminine character in the game. What makes it so potentially relatable is the distinctly Asian relationship between father and son, where neither talks to the other.

Girls’ Generation 1979 (12 Sep)

Story is set in Daegu, South Korea during the 1970’s. Lee Jung-Hee is in the 2nd grade of high school. She has a bright personality and is the second daughter of a family who runs a toy factory. She and her friends go through adolescence.

In some other parts of the world, this show is named “Lingerie Girls’ Generation”. You can see why it is such an intriguing concept. While modern and period Korea is often depicted in dramas, we rarely get to see 70’s Korea. Hopefully, “Girls’ Generation 1979” will provide an authentic look at Korea before it achieved worldwide fame, and show us what life was like for students then.

Young Sheldon (26 Sep)
Warner TV (StarHub TV ch 515, Singtel TV ch 306)

For 9-year-old Sheldon Cooper it isn’t easy growing up in East Texas. Being a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science isn’t always helpful in a land where church and football are king. And while the vulnerable, gifted and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him.

The most popular character of “The Big Bang Theory” now helms his own show, and it seems like we’ll finally get answers to how and why Sheldon is the way he is. However, without similarly nerdy characters surrounding Young Sheldon, we might not get the same kind of comedy as we did from its parent show. Here’s hoping that the young star Iain Armitage performs as admirably in the show itself as he has in the trailers.
