Overview of January shows
Streaming services take a backseat to broadcast channels, which are taking the new year as an opportunity to premiere television series old and new. “Grimm” finally launches its last season while “Hawaii Five-O” returns, still going strong. There’s an interesting new comedy, “Superstore”, which has garnered a second season. Meanwhile, a new slate of Korean dramas start in January.
Superstore (second season) (18 Jan, Wednesdays 8.30pm)

America Ferrera and Ben Feldman star in a workplace comedy about a unique family of employees at a super-sized megastore. From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and in-it-for-life managers, together they tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.
If America Ferrara sounds familiar to you, that’s because she was the star of “Ugly Betty”. She helms this new comedy and thankfully, doesn’t have to be ugly on purpose any more. It sounds like cross between an expanded version of the Buy More portions of “Chuck” with cast that’s more pleasant on the eyes and “The Office”.

Seo Joon-O used to be a popular singer, but he isn’t popular anymore. Now, he works as a reporter for a TV entertainment show. He and his stylist Ra Bong-Hee land on a deserted island.
The premise is a recipe for comedic disaster. You’ve got a former diva with another person who used to work for divas who are forced to work together. It sounds almost like a reality TV show, except that it’s fictional, even though most reality TV shows are works of fiction anyway. Still, this sounds like a quirky enough comedy to be worth your time over Chinese New Year.
Shadowhunters (second season) (3 Jan)

The life of typical teen Clary Fray is upended when she learns that she’s part of a race of demon-hunting humans who have the blood of angels.
“The Mortal Instruments” wasn’t great, but that doesn’t mean the subsequent TV series followed its fate. The fact that it’s garnered a second season means that it was relatively successful. And what’s there not to like? It’s about a half-human, half-angel who was to hunt demons. Sort of like “Supernatural” but with more chicks.
