Every month, we’ll tell you about new comedies and dramas to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.

Overview of December’s shows

December looks like a quiet month on the Korean dramas front, with 9.9 Billion Woman, Hot Stove League, and Diary of a Prosecutor premiering on Viu. Suria debuts the sixth season of soccer animated series Supa Strikas this month as well. The much anticipated Witcher series by Netflix also comes out in December. But the most exciting “series” this month has to be Crisis on Infinite Earths — an ambitious five part crossover between Arrowverse series Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow — which, hopefully, doesn’t end with as many casualties as the similar titled comic book series of the 80’s.

9.9 Billion Woman (4 Dec)
Viu

When domestic abuse victim Jung Seo-yeon (Cho Yeo-jeong) acquires 9.9 billion won (equivalent of $9 million USD), her life seems to have finally changed for the better. But former detective Kang Tae-woo (Kim Kang-woo) enters the picture, and he’s determined to solve the cold case of his sibling’s death. Their paths soon cross, with unexpected consequences.

Striking the lottery is everyone’s fantasy, which is what 9.9 Billion Woman is attempting to appeal to with the series. While its title seems to hint that this will be a comedy series, the trailer shows that it’s going to be anything but hilarious. There appear to be conspiracies and crimes beneath the surface, and I certainly hope Seo-yeon manages to spend that money at some point in the series (preferably before the typical romantic melodrama occurs).

Crisis On Infinite Earths (9 Dec, 9.50pm; see below for details)
Warner TV (Singtel TV CH 306 / StarHub CH 515)/Warner Encore

  • Part 1: Supergirl (9 Dec, Monday 9.5opm)
  • Part 2: Batwoman (Warner TV Encore)
  • Part 3: The Flash (11 Dec, Wednesday 9.50pm)
  • Part 4: Arrow (15 Jan, Wednesday 9pm)
  • Part 5: Legends of Tomorrow (15 Jan, Wednesday 9.50pm)

When multiple realities are threatened, heroes from across Earth(s) and beyond must come together to save all they care about. Old friends reunite, even as alternate versions of the same hero work together to stop what may be the greatest threat they have ever faced. However, even that may not be enough to save all universes.

If you’re a fan of the Arrowverse series of shows, you’ve probably squealed in delight at the prospect of everyone coming together in this annual crossover series, which seems to be inspired by the 80’s Crisis on Infinite Earths comic series (which rebooted the DC comics universe and streamlined it). But in that comic book series, Flash and Supergirl died (they got better though), which is a little frightening given that two of the shows in the crossover are literally The Flash and Supergirl. With rumours that Tom Welling (who played Clark Kent on Smallville) making an appearance, as well as Brandon Routh supposedly reprising and older version of his Superman Returns character (Superman), this crossover promises to be every bit as epic as its title. I’ll go squeal now.

Supa Strikas 6 (13 Dec, Fridays 6pm)
Suria

Based on the comic book series of the same name, Supa Strikas revolves around the adventures of the “best” football team there is. Their adventures go beyond just that of the world of football, even as they learn more about themselves, each other, and the meaning of teamwork.

This cute and little known animated series has spawned six seasons — so it should really be given more acclaim! While the animation style is a little simplistic, props has to be given for the variety of adventures they go on, which span the gamut from action to mystery. Plus, there are good morals to be learnt about sportsmanship and teamwork. What’s there not to like?

The Witcher (20 Dec)
Netflix

Based on the book series (which also spawned video games and a best-to-be-forgotten film), The Witcher is the second television series to depict the adventures of monster hunter Geralt (Henry Cavill). In a land of magic and mystery, Geralt must ally with a sorceress and a princess as they travel the land together.

The series isn’t out yet, and already it has been green lit for a second season! The fantasy series looks like it has a firm grip on drama while still being able to inject small doses of light-heartedness to prevent it from taking itself too seriously. If you’re a fan games, you’d want to catch this series to see how it translates on screen with a hefty budget. Maybe one day we’ll finally get our God of War series.
