Every month, we’ll tell you about new comedies and dramas to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.

Overview of May’s shows

Television screens have become more important than ever (who’d have thought?), thanks to the current COVID-19 situation. Fortunately, the channels have stepped up, with a bevy of Korean dramas across multiple channels. Kkondae Intern on Oh!K and Viu seems to be the most interesting since’s it’s a wish fulfilment drama that we can all relate to. On the English front, HBO’s I Know This Much Is True takes Mark Ruffalo (who plays the Hulk and Bruce Banner) and literally makes him play identical twins, which is amusing on several levels (although the show is a drama). For kids, UniKitty! debuts on Cartoon Network, giving us more adventures of the brick kitten. For those in between, the final season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will be out on Netflix — which will bring She-Ra’s story to a close (but hopefully leave room for He-Man’s one to begin).

UniKitty! (30 May, Saturdays and Sundays 11.30am)
Cartoon Network (Starhub TV Ch 316, Singtel TV Ch 226)

The series revolves around the titular character from The Lego Movie series, who is the ruler of the Unikingdom. Alongside her friends Prince Puppycorn, Dr Fox, Hawkodile, and Richard, they must contend with all the issues that happen in their kindom, as well as dealing with the devious Master Frown from the neighbouring kingdom. Tara Strong voices Princess Unikitty.

While Unikitty was a 3D-animated character in The Lego Movie, she’s transformed into a traditional, 2D hand-drawn version in her own series. She’s also voiced by Tara Strong (Alison Brie provided the voice for the film). There’s less of the Lego aspect here, as can be seen from the backgrounds and props — but that’s also probably due to budgetary constraints (it’d be tough to build a Lego set for each scene on an animated series budget!). But she seems as cute as ever!

I Know This Much Is True (11 May, Mondays 9am)
HBO (Starhub Ch 601, Singtel Ch 420)

The series is based on the novel of the same name, which revolves around a brother takes care of his identical twin, who suffers from mental health issues. But when disaster strikes, old skeletons are dug out of the closet which sets them on a path of discovery, betrayal, loss, and forgiveness. The Birdsey brothers are played by Mark Ruffalo.

Admit it — when you first saw Mark Ruffalo playing the role of twins, you thought that this would be a cinch for him after his Jekyll-and-Hyde outing as the Hulk. That’s probably what the producers thought too when casting him, but thankfully there won’t be a lot of CGI involved (there is some, but not of Hulk-like proportions). But with Mark Ruffalo at the helm, you know you’re going to get good drama (even if it seems a bit familiar) in this series.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Season 5) (15 May)
Netflix

In the final season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Horde Prime is poised to secure victory over She-Ra and the Rebellion. But now that the Sword of Protection is broken, sacrificed in the previous season to save the planet of Etheria, how will Adora be able to transform into She-Ra? And without She-Ra, does the universe stand a chance against Horde Prime?

Even though She-Ra’s sword was broken in the Season 4 finale, we all know that she’ll find some way to reforge it within the first few episodes of Season 5. What’s interesting is how Horde Prime has pivoted to becoming the big bad of the series — we were all excited about the formless Horde Prime in the original 80’s series and all the unrealised potential that such a villain would have. This remake of She-Ra finally gives us what we’ve all been waiting for, and it’ll be an exciting final battle when they finally clash!

KKondae Intern (21 May)
Viu

High-flying executive Ka Yeol-Chan (Park Hae Jin) finds himself with an intern who’s much older than him — and that intern happens to be his rigid, traditional ex-boss from his first company out of school! Now that the tables have turned, how will Ka Yeol-Chan behave towards his boss-turned-intern? More importantly, will such an old fogey be able to survive in his role as an intern?

It is rather weird that the English translation of the title is a mix of Korean (“Kkondae”, which is a descriptor that roughly translates to old-fashioned and rigid), and English (“Intern”), since it’s not immediately clear what the premise of the show is. But it is certainly everyone’s fantasy — who hasn’t dreamed of being able to stick it to their lousy ex-bosses? It’ll be fun to see how this wish fulfillment drama pans out, especially since this may very well be a situation we’ll see in the near future.
