Highlights

This month, Korean drama Military Prosecutor Doberman looks set to dominate screens, premiering on no less than three platforms — Viu, iQiyi, and tvN. If you’re in the mood for more dramas, the second season of Bridgerton returns on Netflix too. On the superhero and science fiction front, we’ve got Disney+’s Moon Knight and the second season of Star Trek: Picard on Amazon Prime Video. But if your tastes are a little more British, then HBO Go’s pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death might be just what you’re looking for.

Military Prosecutor Doberman (1 Mar)
Viu
iQiyi
tvN (StarHub Ch 824; Singtel Ch 518) (Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.15pm)

This drama revolves around two military prosecutors who choose the job for very different reasons, but learn and work together to become great military prosecutors. Ahn Bo-hyun stars as Do Bae-man, an indifferent prosecutor who only took on the job to make more money, and looks forward to the day when he can take off his military uniform. On the other hand, Cha Woo-in (Jo Bo-ah) is the only daughter of a chaebol family who chooses to become a military prosecutor to seek revenge.

Romance, the armed forces, and the law — it looks like a winning combination that could even outshine 2016’s Descendants of the Sun! It’s all a little predictable though (when you have two leads of different genders who have different world views, you know there’ll be a romance by the fourth episode) since it’s a premise that’s been done before. Nevertheless, the production values look good and military conscription is a topic close to Korean and Singaporean hearts. This looks like it’ll be a hit.

Our Flag Means Death (3 Mar)
HBO Go

This comedy is (very) loosely based on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby. After trading in the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Taika Waititi. Stede and crew attempt to get their ship together and survive life on the high seas.

Honestly, we’ve all been aching for more pirate adventures ever since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie. This one’s got a bit of wry humour, with characters who brag better than they fight (presumably). The jokes sound perfect for a pirate movie, with seemingly self-aware characters. And come on, doesn’t everyone love a good pirate costume (and ship)?

Star Trek: Picard (Season 2) (4 Mar)
Amazon Prime Video

This science fiction series takes the legendary Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek fame and his crew on a bold and exciting
new journey: into the past. In the second season, Picard must enlist friends both old and new to confront the perils of 21 st
century Earth in a desperate race against time to save the galaxy’s future – and face the ultimate trial from one of his greatest foes.

The Sir Patrick Stewart renaissance is upon us — what with a second season of him reprising his Captain Picard role and him possibly returning as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But what’s most interesting is that this season will seemingly take place in the present day, with our time travellers attempting to change history. In the past, limited budgets meant that futuristic shows which depict their characters time travelling to the past were really just a disguised way to save money. But here, it looks good, it looks warranted, and most importantly — it looks interesting.

Bridgerton (Season 2) (25 Mar)
Netflix

This period drama revolves around the Bridgerton siblings as they search for love. In the second season, duty, desire and scandal collide when viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) decides to marry, only to meet his match in his intended bride’s headstrong big sister.

I’ve always found it a little difficult to get engaged in English period dramas — but even I can’t deny the appeal of scandal-filled Bridgerton. In fact, comparisons have been made to how the show is very much like Gossip Girl, except that it’s set in a different era. As with any such drama, sparks are bound to fly when a marriage is on the cards, very much like how Anthony Bridgerton faces one in this season.

Moon Knight (30 Mar)
Disney+

This superhero drama follows Steven Grant (Oscar Isaac), a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

What I’m really interested to see in this show is how the gods of Egypt will be depicted in a world that has already seen the power of the Norse gods. Does that mean we’ll get to see Thor make an appearance in the show? Precious little is known about the series, but like most MCU shows, it’s bound to be character-driven.

Kung Fu Hairdresser (release date TBA)
iQiyi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysVQmcx6WC0

This action-comedy follows protagonist Li Chong Guang (Shi Zhan), who has learned the skills of martial arts and hairdressing from his father as a child growing up in a small town. He harbours the ambition of going into the big city to carve out his own path, but is always stopped by his father. As he finally travels to the city to further his career, he faces a series of challenges as he tries to establish his own hairdressing empire.

The sheer ridiculousness of juxtaposing kung fu and hairdressing is what gives this movie its huge comic potential. I mean, you’re already chuckling at the thought of how the two elements are going to be weaved together. This feels like one of the refreshing comedy concepts to come out this year, and I hope it does well so we get more.
