Every month, we’ll tell you about all the new shows on terrestrial and cable channels, as well as what’s streaming on Netflix, Disney+, HBO Go, Viu, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video BBC Pl;ayer, and iQiyi.

February Highlights

February is the month of love (well, until 14 February, that is), so of course all major channels will cash in on the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day. But what’s surprising to note is just how much horror is out this month as well! There’s HBO Go’s 30 Coins, Viu’s Remember 15, and Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (a sequel to the original). For the faint-hearted, there’s adventure series Around The World In 80 Days on BBC First, and new thriller Suspicion coming from Apple TV+.

Suspicion (4 Feb)
Apple TV+

In this thriller, the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Uma Thurman) is kidnapped from a New York hotel, the eye of suspicion quickly falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question. As they find themselves in a trans-Atlantic cat and mouse race to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the FBI to prove their innocence, it becomes apparent that not everyone can be trusted. Who is really behind the mysterious abduction, and who is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

“What does a kidnapper look like?” “You.” That probably encapsulates the spirit of the series, where it seems like anyone can be the culprit, just like a real-life game of Cluedo playing out on screen. That the suspects are British citizens means that we will probably see them waxing lyrical a fair bit. But seeing Uma Thurman, who usually plays characters who are in positions of power, having her hands tied in this series is probably the most intriguing aspect of it all..

Around The World in 80 Days (1 Feb)
BBC First (StarHub Ch 502; Singtel Ch 308)

This drama is an adaptation of Jules Verne’s adventure tale for families around the world! It starts in London, 1872. On the day his world is turned upside down by a postcard from a lost love, Phileas Fogg (David Tennant) is inspired by an article about the exciting advances in travel to take on an almost impossible wager – to circumnavigate the globe in just eighty days. He is joined by quick-witted Frenchman, Passepartout (Ibrahim Koma) and the Daily Telegraph journalist who came up with the whole crazy idea in the first place – Abigail Fix (Leonie Benesch).

“Why can’t we get a train, like normal people?” Well, that’s because the iconic image of the classic story is that of the main characters in a hot-air balloon, isn’t it? David Tennant seems to be adopting the Uncle Scrooge voice that he did for DuckTales, and he seems to be adopting that same manic energy as well. Suffice to say that the entire show will depend on his performance, but it looks like it’s going to be an enjoyable one.

Remember 15 (22 Feb)
Viu

This horror film revolves around 12 teenagers who meet on the fifth death anniversary of their friend Lyla, on the same island where she drowned on her 15th birthday. After the mysterious death of Mac, one of the teenagers, the rest of the group’s complicated relationship with Lyla resurfaces. It is soon made clear that everyone had a connection to Lyla’s death, along with every death that will happen on the island. Everyone must work together to stop the murderer in order to leave the island alive.

12 teenagers is a bit too many for what seems like a slasher flick, but given that there’s nobody else on the island… it’ll be creepy to see their numbers dwindling one by one. This fear and horror, juxtaposed with the hope and idealism of 15-year-0lds, seems like it’ll be the perfect recipe for teasing out the most scares from the audience.

30 Coins (24 Feb)
HBO Go

This eight-episode horror series from Spain follows Father Vergara, an exorcist, sent by the church to become the local priest of Pedraza, a remote town in Spain. When inexplicable terror begins to plague the idyllic community, the local vet Elena and the town’s mayor, Paco, form an unlikely alliance to understand the source of the demonic events.

Horror always seem that much more potent when churches and priests are involved. Perhaps it’s because it feels like if even the most holy of individuals are unable to stand against such horrors, what chance do mere mortals have? And if the trailer is anything to go by, these horrors are certainly not things you want to come across in the middle of the night…

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (18 Feb)
Netflix

This horror film takes place nearly 50 years after the events of the original. Now coming out of hiding, Leatherface returns to terrorise a group of idealistic young friends who accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town.

The small town vibes of the setting cannot be denied — and it underscores the isolation of the small town that Leatherface stalks. It’ll be a gorefest for sure, and if you were a fan of the original, you probably shouldn’t miss this one either.
