[Star Wars] HasLab’s Razor Crest – this is the way all adult collectibles should be made!

Spoilers ahead — if you haven’t watched The Mandalorian (both seasons), then you might want to consider watching both seasons before reading this review, since there will be references to some key events in the show. But then, if you’re considering purchasing this massive spaceship, it’s probably fair to assume that you’re a fan of the series (and possibly its spinoffs, like The Book of Boba Fett).

The Razor Crest is the spaceship of Din Djarin from The Mandalorian, and this version is scaled for 3.75 inch figures (Hasbro’s Star Wars products come in two scales, 6 inch figures or 3.75 inch figures). In the series, the Razor Crest is a modified gunship from the era before the Galactic Empire, specifically a ST-70 Assault Ship model. There have been other versions of the Razor Crest – a beautiful Lego set (75292), an adorable Mission Fleet version for kids, and many assorted ones. But this HasLab version is the largest and most detailed version by far.

This Razor Crest is the second Star Wars item from HasLab, which is Hasbro’s crowdfunding platform for big, expensive products (read: adult collectibles), after Jabba the Hutt’s Sail Barge. Other HasLab products have included the transforming planet Unicron from The Transformers, and the giant mutant-killing robotic Sentinel from X-Men. The funding campaign run in late 2020 and exceeded expectations (target: 6,000, final backers: 28, 115), meaning that five additional extras (called “Unlocks”) were included in the final product – the escape pod, Grogu (known only then as “The Child”), four bounties encased in carbonite, a display stand, and a Jawa complete with a Mudhorn egg.

And it’s a beauty!

The Razor Crest comes in a relatively small box (compared to the actual size of the vehicle), testament to how compactly it has been packed. The box provides two versions of its box art — a full colour version and the line art version. The various features of the Razor Crest are displayed at the top and bottom of the box, but if you’ve pre-ordered this, you’re probably up to speed on all the play features that it comes with.

But it’s enough to whet your appetite for the gunship within, and it’s pretty sturdy too. It’s not as large as the boxes for the Sentinel or Unicron, but who has the space to keep all these boxes these days?

As you can see, the Razor Crest requires some assembly, and its packed so efficiently that there’s very little wasted space in the styrofoam inserts. Be careful when opening it up though – there are parts on both sides of the styrofoam inserts, and you might miss a few if you don’t turn it over and check.

Din Djarin comes with heaps of accessories and more manbags than even the most pretentious bearded hipster. But don’t worry, they all have a home in the Razor Crest, as you’ll soon see.

The Razor Crest

It’s actually quite easy to assemble the Razor Crest – the parts are large and unique. Most of the time, large vehicles that look symmetrical usually reuse the same parts on the left or right (or they are mirrored versions of each other, saving on design costs). But look a little closer and you’ll notice that the parts are unique. And the connector pegs and holes are all unique shapes — meaning that there’s no chance of you accidentally plugging in the starboard wing on the port side by mistake, because it simply won’t fit. I appreciate this feature very much, because I’ve plugged in my fair share of wrong parts on several vehicles that have needed assembly in the past (and it can be a pain to pull out).

The Razor Crest looks good from every angle, with immaculate detail on all sides. It’s a beauty to behold, and I spent a good few minutes admiring it and humming The Mandalorian theme as I did.

The landing gear for the Razor Crest is removable, but why would you want to do that? Well, that’s because you can’t leave the landing gear on the Razor Crest if you want to use the stand that’s included. The stand is one of the “Unlocks”.

Personally, I’d display it without the stand because I usually, erm, make the Razor Crest fly around. It’s a good workout for the arm for sure. But it’s huge — 30 inches long and with a wingspan of 20 inches.  You’ll need a lot of space to display it.

Features of the Razor Crest

Cockpit of the Razor Crest
Cockpit of the Razor Crest

The Razor Crest has a pretty large cockpit that’s fairly show accurate — there are three seats and a (non-functional) door. It’s quite roomy, even compared to other vehicles of a similar size and scale (I’m looking at you, Millennium Falcon), which means that if you drop an accessory inside, you won’t be needing tweezers to pull it out.

And yes, it’s a perfect fit with Din Djarin and Grogu inside (you’ll have to finagle Grogu a little, because there isn’t a seat or peg to secure him in the cockpit).

The escape pod is one of the “Unlocks” and is integrated into the top of the ship. If you’re wondering which episode it was used in, you’re not alone — it hasn’t been featured in the show. However, the escape pod (called the “Life Pod” by the design team, as seen in The Art of The Mandalorian) has factored this into the design of the Razor Crest from Day One.

And yes, Din Djarin fits in the escape pod quite nicely.

As a gunship, the Razor Crest has two pretty large guns in the front. But it also has rear artillery in this hidden gun turret at the back.

The Razor Crest’s engines are also quite detailed.

The four prisoners in carbonite blocks (seen in the first episode of The Mandalorian) are another of the four “Unlocks”, and they hang from the roof of the Razor Crest (which opens up for playability). They’re not terrible impressive since they’re basically sculpted blocks of plastic, but the fact that they added a feature to let you hang the blocks from the roof is pretty neat.

The side of the Razor Crest also sports an area where you can store one of the carbonite blocks. However, the clearance for the door of the compartment isn’t great — you’ll need to remove the side wall of the Razor Crest to open and close this compartment.

You can take out the left wall of the Razor Crest to access the interior, and it also makes for some neat point-of-view pictures.

A Mandalorian and his bags

But if you leave it on, this is where you can store the aforementioned manbags of the Mandalorian. What does he need so many bags for, anyway? Nevertheless, it looks rather impressive to see his array of bags.

The toilet of the Razor Crest
The toilet of the Razor Crest

Yes, the Razor Crest has a toilet (known as a “vac tube”). The name pretty much explains how it works, like most airplane toilets, one supposed. It’s… an interesting detail to put in a ship, for sure.

Guns guns guns

As befits a bounty hunter of his stature, Din Djarin has an arsenal in the Razor Crest that’s bigger than his toilet. It’s where all the accessories go, save for his handheld IB-94 blaster pistol and large Amban sniper rifle. There are pegs to attach each and every single firearm. Many of the firearms look familiar, like they could be moulds from the 3.75 Marvel Legends series.

However, his weapons locker is a tight squeeze for adult hands. Unless you have long slender fingers, you’re going to literally need a long pair of tweezers to fit all those weapons in. I’m not sure if this was an intentional design, but it took the better part of an hour to hang and arrange all his weapons which, thankfully, will not fall off once attached.

Stripping down the Razor Crest

Remember the second episode, where Din Djarin found the Razor Crest stripped down for parts? Many panels can be taken apart to simulate this look — and the Razor Crest even has detailing under those panels.

And since the panels are all of a different shapes and sizes, there’s no chance of you fitting the wrong panel onto the wrong place.

Din Djarin

The big draw of this Din Djarin is that this is a late Season One design (before he acquires the beskar spear and Darksaber), He comes with his rocket pack, Amban sniper rifle, and IB-94 blaster pistol. Oh, and a “soft goods” cape (read: a cloth cape). His helmet is not removable though.

Mudhorn sigil

The recently released Maldo Kries version of the 3.75 inch Mandalorian is currently the only other Mandalorian figure to sport the Mudhorn sigil — but it doesn’t come with a cloth cape.

Din Djarin can wear everything and he looks pretty good from the front, but its his back that is a little bit of an issue. In the show, he wears his cape, and plugs his Amban sniper rifle and rocket pack over the cape. But if you do that to this figure, it’s not very secure and you run the risk of damaging his cape.

The other Mandalorian figures have gotten around this problem by providing a sculpted cape that “drapes” around the side of his weapons and rocket pack, but it’s not as easy to simulate that look on this version of the Mandalorian.

But his cape is quite show accurate, with the tears in them just like in the show.

Other figures

Grogu packaging

This version of Grogu, with the chromed hover-pram, is one of the “Unlocks” for exceeding a certain number of backers. Honestly, I don’t think they’d have issued a full-size Razor Crest and Din Djarin without including Grogu, so I think we’d have gotten the little one anyway. Maybe just not the hover-pram.

Grogu comes with the Razor Crest’s knob moulded into his hand (the one he plays with) and a bowl for him to eat from. The hover-pram is a late Season One design, and it looks well-chromed (ie, the chrome is unlikely to flake off easily). Nevertheless, as with all chromed items, you should handle it with care.

Jawa packaging

It also comes with a Jawa figure (we’ve seen this before, so it’s probably a retool) but with the Mudhorn egg that Din Djarin was sent to acquire in the second episode. There’s a broken egg and an unopened egg.

He’s dubbed a “Jawa Elder” and comes with several weapons, but really, it’s not easy to tell the Jawa’s apart. But it does answer the question — what does a Jawa look like under the hood?

Now you know.

The figures are a nice bonus for the Razor Crest, and providing an antagonist for the Mandalorian to fight out of the box is a good touch.

Conclusion

HasLab's Razor Crest
HasLab’s Razor Crest

So how does HasLab’s Razor Crest stack up? Well, it was designed in 2020, when we only had one season of The Mandalorian, so it doesn’t have any of the features from the second season. But that’s more of a minor quibble than anything else.

It comes packed with features, it’s incredibly detailed, and makes for an impressive centrepiece on any dinner table. If you’re a fan of The Mandalorian, you have to get this — but be prepared to shell out. Then again, if you’re a Star Wars collector, you’ll be used to this.

Personally, I hope all future HasLab products have this level of detail and this number of play features — it works both as a collectible to admire and a toy to play with. HasLab, this is the way. Please let all your future releases be as good as the Razor Crest (but perhaps not as expensive).

The Razor Crest originally went on pre-order for $679.90 and is available at Robo Robo and all good specialty toy shops.
