Every month, we’ll tell you what upcoming movies are screening in cinemas islandwide, and which are the ones that you must watch.
Overview of June’s releases
We finally get to watch “Warcraft” this month, although it’s been renamed “Warcraft: The Beginning.” If you’re tired of the usual Hollywood fare, there are several more indie foreign language films out this month. And since it’s June, the school holidays are upon us with lots of animated cartoons. But if you like more mainstream offerings, there’s “Now You See Me 2,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Me Before You” too.
April and the Extraordinary World (2 June)
Paris,1941. A family of scientists is on the brink of discovering a powerful invincibility serum when all of a sudden, the parents are mysteriously abducted, leaving their young daughter, April, behind. Ten years later, April is living alone with her precious cat, Darwin, continuing her family’s research. But soon, she finds herself at the center of a bizarre conspiracy. Along with Darwin and her trusted friend, Julius, April embarks on an adventure to find her parents and discover the truth behind their disappearance.
It’s a quirky French animation. I mean, how often do you see that? We usually associate French films with more adult themes and serious issues, and it’ll be interesting to see how they take this approach with an animated film. And when was the last time you saw a 2D, hand drawn cartoon? There’s so much that’s offbeat about this film that it’ll be exciting to see how it all comes together.
And there’s the invincibility serum. You’re already imagining what you’d do with that.
Sadako vs Kayako (23 June)
Sadako was murdered and thrown down a well, Kayako was murdered at a young age and is still angry about it. These two spirits go against each other battling to be Japan`s scariest ghoul.
It’s a very simple premise which has so much potential. It’s not just about the two ghosts going up against each other, there’s also an innocent girl who’s caught in between the two vengeful spirits. No matter who wins, the world still loses, since there’s still a vicious spirit on the loose.
And who still has a VCR in this day and age? This must be how Sadako got loose, since her curse would have faded with the decline of VCRs.
Apprentice (30 June)
When he is transferred to a new work place, 28-year-old correctional officer, Aiman, forms a friendship with 65-year-old Rahim, the prison`s chief executioner. When the latter`s assistant suddenly quits his job, Aiman is asked by Rahim to become his apprentice.
Directed by Boo Junfeng, which means it’s a local film (support local!), “Apprentice” looks to be a fascinating exploration of capital punishment in Singapore. And it looks like a balanced viewpoint too, since the hangman is a sympathetic character in the trailer. It’s a side of Singapore we’ve never seen before, and definitely one that has global appeal.
