Overview of October’s shows

There are so many shows coming out this month that virtually every genre is covered. Viu gives you a slew of seven Korean dramas this month to follow, which means you can watch a different one every day of the week! The Arrowverse completes its line up on Warner TV with “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” and “Arrow”, so superhero fans can get their fix as well. Channel 5 debuts a new road trip drama with a provocative title, “BRA”, that promises to bring an interesting premise to life on screen.

Stranger Things (Season 2) (27 Oct)
Netflix

It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.

This “Lost”-“Twin Peaks” 80’s hybrid show returns with higher stakes for Season 2, and a promise of an antagonist more powerful than Season 1’s Demogorgon as well as locations beyond that of the small town of Hawkins. Does this mean we’ll get to see other beloved aspects of the 80’s that are more urban in nature? Also, early reports state that the portal to the Upside Down dimension is still open, which means that we could be seeing more of that in this season.

Stan Lee’s Superhumans (7 Oct, Saturdays 7.05pm)
H2 (StarHub TV Ch 402)

Spider-Man. X-Men. The Hulk. Fact isn’t far from fiction in Stan Lee’s Superhmans. The creator of legendary superheroes, series co-host Stan Lee seeks out real life, superhuman counterparts – people whose remarkable powers stem from being genetically different. Lab tests help explain their extraordinary physical abilities. And stories from long-recorded history prove that people like these have always walked among us. Dubbed the most flexible man in the world, series host David Browning Smith adds unique understanding through his personal experience.

Is fact stranger than fiction? Probably not when it comes to Marvel’s superheroes, but “Stan Lee’s Superhumans” looks like an interesting exploration into the supposed potential of the human body. The show features people who have innately fantastic abilities, and those who have earned it through sheer persistence and training. We probably won’t get to see any aliens though.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (Season 3) (11 Oct, Wednesdays 9pm)
Warner TV (StarHub TV Ch 515 and Singtel TV Ch 306)

After the defeat of Eobard Thawne and his equally nefarious Legion of Doom, the Legends face a new threat created by their actions at the end of last season. In revisiting a moment in time that they had already participated in, they have essentially fractured the timeline and created anachronisms – a scattering of people, animals, and objects all across time! The team must find a way to return all the anachronisms to their original timelines before the time stream falls apart.

Is that B’wana Beast in the trailer (check 0:32)? DC’s television universe (the Arrowverse) continues to grow in exciting new directions with the third season of “Legends of Tomorrow”. Although it might be hard to top the Legion of Doom’s appearance in the previous season, here’s hoping that we get to see the more esoteric characters of the DC universe (and hopefully, more legendary artifacts too!).

Black (15 Oct)
Viu

The story of a grim reaper who gets erased from the memories of the world for breaking the rules of heaven and falling in love with a mortal woman after inhabiting a human body.

Stories of star-crossed lovers are always popular, and adding a fantasy element to it makes the drama so much interesting. In addition, since there’s a grim reaper involved, there’s sure to be an episode where the mortal woman’s loved ones are endangered. Will the couple finally be together by the end of series? Or will they meet a grim ending?

BRA (23 Oct, Mondays to Thursdays 10pm)
Channel 5

After receiving the most devastating news, distraught oncologist Alexis takes to the open road to Penang to confront her estranged father who broke her heart 30 years ago. However, she’s forced to bring along unexpected baggage: Mdm Sophia, her Alzheimer’s-stricken mother; Brenda, ex-model turned housewife; and Rathika, an aspiring actress desperate for a breakthrough in her career.

What starts out as a 3-day road trip to find closure, sends the dysfunctional group of four on an odyssey of friendship and self-discovery; but things don’t go as planned, not when love is hot on their heels.

Singaporean road trips are a unique premise, since it usually doesn’t take more than a day’s drive to get anywhere, even in Malaysia (and neither is it all that cost effective). However, what makes this interesting is that it looks like the main characters get involved in a romantic subplot. How will that happen during a road trip? What do Singaporeans do when placed in close proximity without their mobile phones (we presume)? Most importantly, what obstacles will they encounter on this 3-day long trip?
