[Toys] 5 toys I want to buy from STGCC (and 3 dudes to look out for too!)

Merlions. (Funko Pop Facebook Page)

So this year’s Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention is back at Marina Bay Sands (please don’t make the horrible mistake I did and make plans to go to Suntec City) and that means more shopping to do! After all, “Toy” is one of the five words that make up STGCC (unlike say, SDCC), so you know that at least 20% of the floor space will be devote to toys.

So after attending yesterday’s STGCC Media Preview (thanks SPRG!) here are my picks for tomorrow’s STGCC! I won’t buy anything else.

Of course I claim to limit myself to just five toys but bluff one la. Just hope I make it alive through the crowds.

5. XXRay DC Villains

Don’t type XXXRay (that’s an extra X) into Google Search because, well, some things can’t be unseen. Of course, you’re going to go off and do that right now so please come back to this page when you’re done.

Anyways, I always like to form the Injustice Gang, the Secret Society of Super Villains, and the Legion of Doom whenever I can (to the point that I’ve asked Jedd Jong to help custom some JLU villains), so it always excites me to know that I can form another group of villains to oppose the Justice League. There’s Joker and Black Manta to start, and Deathstroke is always fun to add to the collection.

Did Deathstroke appear in JLU? No? OK. Custom idea.

Anyways they’ll be at the Mighty Jaxx booth (H3).

Donatello. (Bandai)

4. SHFiguarts Donatello

I also secretly collect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I think the 2012 series is great (though I wish the toy distribution would be a little better here, and I’ve been trying to get in touch with Passion Marketing for ages). I didn’t get the 2012 SHFiguarts Turtles because I had too many versions of the 2012 Turtles (Mystic Quest, LARP, Battle Shell, Space, the recoloured versions, just to name a few) but I do have a slight tinge of regret there.

Anyways, Donatello! There’s Leonardo also la but I like Donatello because he’s smart. He’s a mugger. He could conceivably build enough weapons to take out the other 3 Turtles, making him the most powerful of the lot. If there were Michelangelo I’d pick him but that’s not an option yet.

He and Leonardo will be at the Bandai booth (F19).

3. Funko Pop Merlion

Again, I will forever regret not getting the Lego MBS set (some scalper tried to sell it to me for $300 plus a month later) so the Merlion is my chance to redeem myself. Seriously, I talk about the Merlion way too much whenever Singapore is mentioned in an article. I should go pitch a show about the Merlion.

So it’s a Funko Pop Merlion! He can be friends with my Funko Pop Cthulhu. Yes. I am weird that way.

Both versions will be at the Simply Toys booth (B3) (it’s too big to miss).

Foldios!

2. Foldio

Uhhhh I don’t have a light tent/box for those of you who think I do. Did you really think I had one? Thanks guys, but uh… don’t look too closely at the backgrounds of my pictures yeah? Too many cracks in the walls. So a Foldio looks light (didn’t dare to touch it though, was worried I might damage it) and convenient enough to bring around (in case I feel the need to go to my friend’s tuition centre) and it has a replaceable backdrop.

Need to look for the Orangemonkie guys for this one at booth H2. I presume they are guys. Hope that is not sexist.

Fort Max! (Hasbro)
Fort Max! (Hasbro)

1. Fortress Maximus (with the Master Sword!)

And yes, this is the same Fortress Maximus that was out at SDCC! OK we’re all a little sad that the regular one didn’t come with a removable weapon, so having a Master Sword solves everything! Granted, you could do the Toys R Us promo and get a Master Sword but that’ll take a while. Also, this one has the G1 deco. Meaning that yes, you can re-enact all those scenes in Transformers: Headmasters and hum the tune along to it.

Also, this Master Sword can split into three pieces so you can give Fortress (or Cerebros, but I’m calling him Fortress) a smaller Master Sword to wield. Then you can also gek a little bit the way he does when he pulls out the Master Sword so that he can transform from Fortress to Fortress Maximus. Megazarak never had that problem (and he had a more powerful shield, too).

Fort Max is at the Simply Toys booth, B3 (where the Merlion lives). Again, too big to miss!

Bonus!

3 dudes to look out for at STGCC

So here are some people who were kind enough to take a photo with Optimus Prime, and therefore, are people that you should check out (not in that way please), buy products from, and get an autograph with at STGCC.

Nick Spencer.
Nick Spencer.

A. Nick Spencer

He’s the guy who made Captain America a Hydra agent and prompted a lot of memes. At least no Superior Spider-Rapist la yeah? He’s a nice fellow, because anyone who takes photos with Optimus Prime is a nice guy, and you should check him out at his panel. Which is at 2.15pm on 10 Sep. #HailHydraSTGCC is a weird hashtag though.

Andy Choo.

B. Andy Choo

He’s the fellow who did the Comfort taxi Optimus Prime drawing, and the Avengers/One Piece crossover art. I don’t really watch One Piece all that much but props to someone who likes two franchises enough that he’ll cross them over. Plus Singaporean Transformers! That’s the real draw. I hope we will be real life friends one day. He’s at Andimoo Studios, booth AA6. I hope he doesn’t reject my Facebook friend request when I pluck up the courage to click Add Friend.

Peter Lin.

C. Peter Lin

Peter’s from Here Be Geeks and is the pop culture professor to my pop culture scholar (if you’ve ever read my bio, which nobody reads, sigh). Like Benson Yee (Transformers consultant on Beast Wars) and Ryan Yzquierdo (I had to Google how to spell that), he’s a fan who’s gone pro because he’s moderating not one, but two panels – the Nick Spencer one (2.15 pm) and the Tom Taylor one (4.00 pm) on 10 September. Tom Taylor did Injustice, the comic where the Justice League rules the world (I am sure I am oversimplifying this).

I am now terrified that I have gotten some pop culture reference wrong somewhere, and I’m also nervous that someone is going to point out that I’ve made a grievous error that no true fan ever should. Please message me discreetly if I have.

And enjoy STGCC!
