If you don’t know who Cybaxx is, maybe you’ve heard of him by another name – Boltax, as in, from Jim Sorenson’s website Disciples of Boltax. Here he’s a member of the Technobots, but as Boltax he’s the guardian of the Temple of Knowledge (and hence very smart and thus a worthy new addition to the Technobots). Scrounge, his larger partner, is a comic-only character (until now) who’s main claim to fame is having a “special arm”.
But anyway, both are now Technobots in the Combiner Wars universe! Scrounge is a retool of Cosmos and transforms into a flying saucer, and becomes a sort of shield for Computron (giving Computron a “special arm” as a result), while Cybaxx is a retool of Payload and transforms into a X-37B space shuttle. Interestingly, Cosmos and Payload were sold together as a pair, so it’s fitting that these two are too. Scrounge and Cybaxx are also in scale with each other, though not with the rest of the Technobots. They’re part of the Computron gift set.
The Computron gift set retails for $199.90 and is available at all good departmental stores. Thanks Hasbro for sending him over!
Scrounge in alternate mode
Oddly, I find that yellow is a more suitable colour for a flying saucer than green (which was Cosmos’ colour). Yellow feels more alien whereas green feels like it’s trying to camouflage on Earth. So it works for Scrounge in that he’s more of a robot in disguise than ever with his yellow deco. The yellow is broken up with several splashes of red, most noticeably the “arrows” running down his front. He’s also got several “windscreens” which illustrate the fact that he’s really supposed to be big enough to house Computron himself.
I like how the engines are painted red too. The parts that were selected to be red were pretty well chosen!
Scrounge in robot mode
In robot mode, Scrounge has got these red energy lines on his shoulder pads that remind us of the red Energon lines on War for Cybertron/Fall of Cybertron Autobots. It’s also got a bit of that “Tron” feel to it too. His face has a very alien quality to it too, which fits perfectly since he is a flying saucer after all.
Actually he looks a little bit like Straxus. I won’t be surprised if the Scrounge mould turns up again as a Decepticon!
Cybaxx in alternate mode
While the yellow works for Scrounge, for Cybaxx it makes him look quite unearthly. He’s got red cockpit windows but besides that, his entirely yellow form seems unusual. Yet we’ve not really seen an alien space shuttle before, so it’s a little difficult to grasp that idea first. Once you understand it though, then you realise that hey, a yellow space shuttle does make sense. Cybaxx is from an alien race, just like Scrounge.
He also looks a little bit like a yellow bullet. This also fits because Cybaxx transforms into Scrounge’s weapon too!
Cybaxx in weapon mode
Cybaxx transforms into a dangerous looking weapon with twin cannons. Relative to Scrounge’s size, the weapon looks like it’ll do quite a bit of damage. He can also be wielded by the other Technobots, though he’d be about the same size as their weapons. I like the cannons though, they’re specially sculpted and moulded for this purpose but they’re hidden away in robot and alternate mode.
Dangerous looking, right?
Cybaxx in robot mode
Cybaxx is bigger than a Headmaster/Titan Master (which is the main feature of the new Transformers: Titans Return line), although he can’t sit down the way they can. But hey, Cybaxx is a Triplechanger. And he’s a tiny Triplechanger! He’s got a new headsculpt, and it’s pretty detailed when you take a close look at it.
Check out his face! For such a small face, the paint job is well done too.
Scrounge and Cybaxx make a compatible duo since they both fit the alien theme. As new additions to the Technobots, their original backstories also fit, being knowledge/intelligence related. They might be a bright yellow, but it’s an alien yellow.
