“The Coronation” is the third Chapter (episode) of Book Four: Balance (Season Four) of The Legend of Korra. If you’re wondering who’s coronation it is, it should be pretty obvious that it’s Prince Wu’s. And if you’re wondering how on the nose a title can be, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Of course his coronation is interrupted. Whether or not it resumes is something you’ll need to watch to figure out.

There’s not much of the fantasy aspect in this episode – it’s a very character-driven, political episode. If not for some token Bending, this could have very well been an animated drama serial. Still, the strength of “Legend of Korra” is the character interaction, so it’s still a good watch.

Highlights

Toph’s awesomeness

Toph was already pretty funny and powerful in the previous series, so it’s no surprise to see that she has retained all of her lethality, while upping her snark factor. In yet another moment of awesome, Toph reveals the truth behind Korra’s disability, because she is possibly the only one in the world who can detect what is holding her back. Here’s to hoping we see Toph fight some bad guys!

Kuvira’s coup

Kuvira has been pitched as the Big Bad for the season, so her coup doesn’t come as a surprise. In fact, you’re just waiting for her to grab the throne. It’s not so much that shock, as it is how she deals with the aftermath of her coup that makes her such an interesting character. And of course, with Bolin working for her and Mako working for Prince Wu, this leads to:

Mako & Bolin’s confrontation

A pretty heated dispute occurs between the both of them, as the political lines are drawn between the brothers. The tragedy of this all, of course, is how politics tears families apart. Though their fight isn’t as violent as Su & Lin’s, it still reinforces the whole theme of siblings and families in this series.

Letdowns

Lack of Bending action

What Bending action? There are some snippets of the fight between Toph and Korra, then there’s one with Mako fending off attacks on Prince Wu. Besides that, it’s more dramatic tension than anything else.

Baatar & Su

I found their conflict boring. Maybe it’s because we’re not all that invested in Baatar – he looks like a douchebag too, which just makes everything worse. Nope, let’s hope he doesn’t reappear (but you know he will).

Kuvira. ("The Coronation" - The Legend of Korra S04E03)
Kuvira. (“The Coronation” – The Legend of Korra S04E03)

“The Coronation” explores all the different conflicts that are happening across the families, with the grand threat of Kuvira looming over everyone. No Asami here though, but it’s not like she’s got intense conflicts with anyone. It’s a good episode, just don’t expect too much action!
