There’s something special about being part of a learning centre that’s focused on making sure that the students learn, rather than being obsessed with expanding and money. I’ve had the chance to help shape the curriculum at Joyous Learning and it’s been a blast learning how to teach students without using university level information to teach them.
We also wrote Grade Expectations for Yahoo during my time at Joyous Learning.
I was with Joyous Learning from 2016 to 2023, and it was an amazing time that I had there. Some of my proudest achievements are:
- 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭 𝘁𝗼 𝟰 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗺. 4 whole levels of Secondary English, complete with Listening Comprehension, Oral, and escape rooms. If I had magnum opus here, it would be this.
- 𝗘𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀. At least 12 two-hour Escape Room lessons for English, across Primary and Secondary levels. And 2 more centre-spanning, three-hour Escape Room workshops for English and Maths.
- 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝟯 𝗚𝗘𝗣 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵. Weekly bonus detective stories for kids to solve. Along the way, I managed to weave in a storyline, a romance, an arch nemesis, a group of supervillains, and a wedding.
- 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Adrian and I wrote an education column for Yahoo, based on our experiences in the industry.
- 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗘𝘁𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗼𝗸é𝗺𝗼𝗻. A 4-hour workshop that taught kids to spot the wordplay in Pokémon. I would have gone on to do a series for different franchises, which is something I still hope to do one day!
