So I just got this press release from Shaw about how “Ip Man 3” is the highest grossing box office for a Chinese movie for a single day in Singapore, at over S$765,000.
Breakdown of figures
That’s probably on a weekend, so at ticket prices of about $12 on average (conservatively), it’s about 60,000 tickets sold. With probably 4 screenings (3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm), that means it’s 15,000 tickets per screening time. A quick glance at some online cinema bookings show that it’s about 400 people in a cinema (20 by 20), so about 38 cinemas screened “Ip Man 3” per slot and they were full house too. There are about 30 cinemas in Singapore so it sounds about right, if they’re all full house.
It’s all a rough estimate, but well, that’s a lot of people watching Donnie Yen beat up other dudes.
Singapore vs Malaysia
As much as this is, though, Malaysia grossed RM12 million (SGD$3.93 million) versus our SGD$2.65 million in 4 days (from the same press release). It also broke records at the Malaysian box office there, though it didn’t give the exact details about the records broken. I’m not entirely sure if that would be a hit, but it does show that if you can get a product out that appeals to Malaysians and Singaporeans, you can more than double your profits. “Ip Man 3” opened in Malaysia on Christmas Eve as well (as did the Singapore release).
How much is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” making then?
