So there’s a blitz of Star Wars toys that are accompanying the new movie, and they’re the standard fare you’d expect, all categorised under “Boys’ Toys.” But head over to the other sections of the toy department, and you’ll realise that Star Wars isn’t just limited to figures of Kylo Ren angsting over Darth Vader — they come in clay, potato, and even transforming variations!
The logic behind this is straightforward of course. If I create a Star Wars Play-Doh product, I’ll be appealing to both fanbases (the Star Wars fandom and the Play-Doh loyalists) with just one item! It’s a win-win situation for all, even if it does mean the oddest synergies of two different brandings. So here’s some Star Wars mash up toys that you weren’t expecting!
1)Star Wars Mr Potato Head
There’s not just one, but a whole line of Star Wars Mr Potato Head toys! In true Mr Potato Head fashion, Kylo Ren is reimagined as Frylo Ren, a wide-eyed Sith potato with his iconic red lightsaber. He even comes with the usual Mr Potato Head accessories so you can give your Sith spud a mouth, if you think that mouthpiece is too intimidating for a kid.
There’s also a Darth Tater out there, which is Mr Potato Head as Darth Vader. But all you need is Darth Tater’s helmet, and you can have Frylo Ren moodily staring (Do we really know he’s staring at the helmet in the trailer? You can’t see Kylo Ren’s eyes.) at the deceased Darth Tater’s helmet.
2)Star Wars Micro Machines
It’s still feasible that there’d be Micro Machines toys from Star Wars, given the plethora of vehicles available. It’s also still believable that they’d make playsets, since all those vehicles need some sort of backdrop to fight on. What’s incredible is that R2D2 is the actual playset here.
It’s true. You can have a mini R2D2 that opens up into a frosty world of snow and ice. It even comes complete with Chewbacca (there’s a surprisingly large number of Chewbacca toys) and Snowtroopers to stage battles with! And a Snowspeeder in for the mix as well.
Bet you never knew that R2D2’s insides looked like that. There’s a lot more to R2D2 than meets the eye, and it looks like R2D2 might play a larger role in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” than you’d expect!
3)Star Wars Play-Doh
It’d be far too complicated to recreate a Star Wars character out of Play-Doh, since there are just so many colours and tiny details to add to a clay figure. So to make up for it, the characters are actually the cans that you put Play-Doh in. The Play-Doh itself is used to make accessories for the cans themselves, meaning you’ve got a Play-Doh lightsaber hanging around somewhere.
It’s weird but also pretty nifty at the same time. Sadly it’s not available in Singpore at this time, but Amazon and eBay are your friends!
4)Star Wars Transformers
And then we have Transformers – where the characters transform into their signature vehicles! So Luke Skywalker transforms into an X-Wing, for instance, and Anakin Skywalker transforms into the Twilight as per the Clone Wars series. Sadly, they’re no longer producing these toys these days, although they were pretty awesome in the day!
But the highlight of this line has to be the Death Star Darth Vader. Not only do you get Darth Vader, but he actually transforms into the Death Star itself! Sure, there’s alot of plates and shells that you have to tuck away, but now we’ve got an actual transforming Death Star! Time to pit it against Unicron…
So what other strange Star Wars toys have you seen?
