With every new trailer new speculation is birthed, and the recent “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” trailer is no different! In it, we see Bebop and Rocksteady in the flesh, which means its official – our favourite mutant warthog and rhinoceros will be battling the Turtles!
Their introduction to the new Ninja Turtles universe doesn’t bode well for our heroes though. And the fact that Baxter Stockman & Karai have also joined the team isn’t good news. But then, the Turtles have Casey Jones on their side, so maybe that’ll even the odds up a little. Still, the appearance of other mutants has a host of nasty (but cool) implications for our Turtles, like:
Mutants are gigantic like Bebop & Rocksteady
We see Bebop & Rocksteady towering over the Turtles and barreling into them like so many bowling pins. Later on, we also see Rocksteady charging through some cars in pursuit of who appears to be Casey Jones. This means that comparative to the Turtles, Bebop & Rocksteady are huge.
But remember that the Turtles themselves pretty big too, about 2 m in height and half as wide. If the Turtles themselves are already of such monstrous sizes, that shows just how gigantic Bebop & Rocksteady are. All future mutants from animals larger than turtles could also be of such gargantuan proportions!
Oddly, they’re still able to fit on motorcycles in the trailer…
Mutagen works on humans
In the first movie, all the mutants (Splinter and the Turtles) were created from animals. The mutagen was dangerous, sure, but back then all we knew was that it could turn animals into mutants, but not humans. Besides, the Turtles’ blood was going to be used to synthesise a cure, so it was presumably beneficial for humans. Even in the original movies, mutants were only created from animals, and not humans.
But here, we clearly see the human form of Bebop with his distinctive purple shades and hair (do such people exist anymore?). So it’s evident that Bebop & Rocksteady were originally human, then they became mutants. Which means that mutagen works on humans just as much as it does on animals!
So April & Casey Jones stand a chance of being mutated too…
Super Shredder could appear!
And so does Shredder! In the second movie from the original trilogy, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze,” the climatic final fight is not against Shredder, but Super Shredder! The villain drinks the last vial of ooze in a bid to beat the Turtles, and mutates into an even spikier, sharper version of himself known as Super Shredder.
Shredder was already pretty invincible with his armour in the first movie. Imagine if he got hold of the ooze and mutated with his armour to form Super Shredder. That’ll be an awesome fight for the Turtles (and Splinter and Casey Jones and April).
Some form of retro-mutagen exists
Because Bebop & Rocksteady are so powerful, it’s unlikely that any prison can contain them. Also, since mutagen seems fairly easy to find, it could be used as a way to threaten the city. So in all probability, the Turtles will need to find a way to reverse the effects of the mutagen on Bebop & Rocksteady.
If such a retro-mutagen exists, this also means that the Turtles’ own mutations can be reversed. The very solution they seek may end up being their own undoing!
More mutants will appear!
But most excitingly is the fact that even more mutants will appear! That means that any of the characters that we’ve seen could become mutants, as their counterparts do in other iterations of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Karai could become a serpent, Baxter Stockman could become a fly, and we might even see the return of the adorable Tokka & Rahzar (again, from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze”).
There’s no telling how many other mutants we could see. Granted, they might be in future films, but it’d be awesome to see giant anthropomorphic animals do battle with each other across the skyscrapers of New York City.
So are you ready to see more mutants in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows?”
