Every month, we’ll tell you what upcoming movies are screening in cinemas islandwide, and which are the ones that you must watch.

Overview of May’s releases

It’s a good time to be a gamer. Not only is the requisite monthly superhero movie a fantastic one (“X-Men: Apocalypse”), we’ve also got two other films based on popular games, “The Angry Birds Movie” and “Warcraft.” On the Singapore side, we’ve got our first Hollywood horror film starring Adrian Pang, “The Faith of Anna Waters,” and a comedy, “Young and Fabulous.” There’s something to look out for this month for all groups!

Equals

An illustrator named Silas lives in a futuristic utopian society where human emotions have been eradicated. Everyone lives in peace, until a new disease surfaces. Silas becomes an outcast after being infected. His co-worker Nia is also infected but hiding her condition. Together, the two have to escape in order to survive.

It’s got all the ingredients needed to be a good teen dystopia film — a good looking cast, a futuristic world, and a bleak outlook on humanity. The trailer already shows you a world where everything is sterile and follows an Apple aesthetic. But what’s more exciting than the setting is how the film will explore the concepts of emotions and equality. Is it possible to have both at the same time?

The Faith of Anna Waters

Tenacious journalist Jamie Waters travels from Seattle to Singapore to investigate the mysterious suicide of her older sister Anna. Inexplicable events at Anna’s new house and the odd behaviour of her daughter Katie lead Jamie to a string of bizarre suicides involving strange allusions to the Tower of Babel. The supernatural forces arrayed against Jamie intensify when she receives emails from the dead Anna. With the help of her sister’s former husband Sam, Jamie races to solve the mystery of Anna’s death as demonic forces attack Katie and evidence mounts of the Tower of Babel rising once again – in the form of the Internet.

Horror movies usually increase the sense of helplessness and isolation by setting it in a foreign land. But this time, that foreign land is Singapore! While the premise seems pretty simple enough, it’ll be interesting to view the film from a very different perspective — that of a local living in the foreign land shown in the film. Singapore’s depicted with an awful lot of greenery and space, so let’s hope we get to see more heartland aspects of it in “The Faith of Anna Waters.”

X-Men: Apocalypse

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

This is the first time we’ll be seeing Apocalypse on the big screen (well, he was in the post-credits scene of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” but that doesn’t count) and it looks like he’ll be nigh invincible! It’s like another “Captain America: Civil War,” with two opposing groups of super-powered beings battling each other for supremacy. And did you catch that “snikt” at the end of the trailer? Yep, looks like our favourite adamantium clawed mutant will be back!
