Should you watch it, wiki it, or wait for the recap? Watch it.
Max’s new booty call Sebastian turns out to be a DJ at a supermarket, which embarrasses her to no end. Caroline runs into her old nemesis Hilary Waldere, and engages in a one-upmanship contest with her. Meanwhile, Sophie uses an Oujia board to determine whether she should get together with Oleg or not. Is Sophie’s Oujia board for real? Will Max get over Sebastian’s day job? And can Caroline out insult Hilary?
“And the DJ Face” is the second episode of the fourth season of 2 Broke Girls. This episode sees a return to the usual, more raunchy humour of the series with the introduction of a new love interest for Max – Sebastian (Jesse Mecalfe). It also sees a possible recurring nemesis for Caroline in the form of Hilary (Natalie Dreyfuss), although they did resolve that plotline quite conclusively. Still, seeing that both Sebastian and Hilary work in the same grocery store, you never know.
It also gives an extended role to our supporting characters, who frequently don’t get much airtime outside of the diner (and really, why would they interact outside the diner anyway?) with the exception of Sophie. Sadly, the episode sees a return to a worn out old beat – let’s hope it gets cut short this season.
Highlights
Lewd references to Max and Sebastian’s relationship
Come on, this is what you’re watching 2 Broke Girls. The plentiful wordplay and multiple puns on the nature of their carnal relationship is rife through the episode. Some of it is skilfully woven in, some of it is just plain dirty, and the many double entendres just make their whole situation fun to watch.
Unexpected character development for Han
Han gets a surprisingly large starring role in this episode, with his appearance at the Whole Foods where Sebastian and Caroline work. Han’s character is often relegated to Asian and short jokes, and it’s interesting to see his other, geekier/uncool side at play here. He also pays off a beat set up earlier regarding his thriftiness, which redeems Han somewhat.
Sophie’s Ouija board manipulations
From the get go it’s quite obvious that Sophie, in her usual passive manipulative way, is using the Ouija board to justify her decisions. So when an unexpected answer appears later, Sophie’s reaction is pretty hilarious.
Caroline vs Hilary
For once, Caroline is on equal footing with another one of her rich friends, and watching the two Mean Girls go at it presents some fun opportunities for Caroline’s more aggressive personality traits. Also, Hilary is rather easy on the eyes – one of the draws of the show, no?
Letdowns
Oleg and Sophie feel stale
Again? Didn’t this get played to death in the previous two seasons? There’s no possible fresh way this can play out again – why can’t they get new love interests instead of returning to this wrung out storyline? If they want to flog a dead horse, they should involve Chestnut – at least there’s a literal horse involved that way.
Jesse Metcalfe has no comic timing
This is none more evident in his very first scene, where his response to getting kicked in the nuts is awkward, unbelievable, and boring. He’s probably better in more dramatic roles but here, he’s just a pretty face. It’s a pity too, because he gets such golden lines that are delivered in the flattest way possible.
“And the DJ Face” has pretty good dirty jokes and a surprising amount of character development. The guest stars bring an added shine to this episode, most of which goes to counteracting the incredibly stale Sophie-Oleg relationship plot.
