Once Upon A Time has ended as a series, but I just finished Season 6. I know I’m a bit slow, but I wanted to be able to savour and watch this season properly since I know it’s sort of the finale for this part of the series. I didn’t know how they were going to top the epic flavour of the precious season… and they didn’t, not really.
ONCE UPON A TIME – “The Final Battle Part 1 & 2” – Henry awakens to a cursed Storybrooke and discovers Emma has been in the mental hospital, and the Black Fairy is the new mayor. Henry attempts to help Emma regain her memory while Gold tries to find out what has really happened to Belle. Meanwhile, Snow, Charming, Regina, Zelena and Hook are trapped in a crumbling Fairy Tale Land and desperately try to figure out a way to be reunited with Emma and Henry, on season finale of “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, MAY 14 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. Season 6 of Once Upon A Time focuses on the final battle of the Saviour, even as it deals with the fallout of having the residents of The Land of Untold Stories arrive in Storybrooke. It also features the arrival of Rumpelstiltskin and Belle’s child, as well as the tangled family web of dear old Rumpelstiltskin. As the final season starring the original cast, it also gives them a great farewell.

Season 6 was good but I missed the mythological elements (Greek, Hebrew) that they had in Season 5, and they repeated the word “saviour” so many times it made my ears bleed. I mean, yes, I remember who the main character is and what she’s supposed to do. But they ram it down your throat so many times per episode that it seems like they’re terrified you’ll forget who Emma is (since she has no fairy tale equivalent). Don’t worry guys, we all do. We still do.
ONCE UPON A TIME – “Where Bluebirds Fly” – In flashback, Zelena befriends a young woodcutter who has been cursed and turns to her for help finding a new heart. Zelena is forced to choose between keeping her powers and her friendship with him. Meanwhile, in Storybrooke, Zelena decides to take on the Black Fairy and put a stop to her, once and for all, against Regina’s wishes, and the Charmings disagree over Emma and Hook’s wedding plans, on “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, APRIL 23 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. However, they definitely had a bigger budget for the flashback and medieval sequences so it was great seeing more special effects. Because of that, we got to see more scenes set in the Enchanted Forest and all the other fairytales. It did seem like they were stretching the flashback stories a little bit too much at times, just to feature Snow White, Prince Charming, and the Evil Queen. But it also felt like an attempt to do a back-to-basics approach, which didn’t pan out all that well.
ONCE UPON A TIME – “A Wondrous Place” – When Hook finds himself trapped in another realm along with the Nautilus and her crew, he races to return to Emma before Gideon can execute the rest of his plan. In Storybrooke, Regina and Snow take Emma out to get her mind off Hook’s disappearance. And in a flashback to Agrabah, Jasmine befriends Ariel, and together they set out to locate Prince Eric as the threat from Jafar intensifies, on “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, APRIL 2 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. Wasn’t all that big on the Evil Queen since it felt like they were trying to salvage the Regina’s character. It was fun seeing her in costume almost all the time though, especially since her cleavage seemed to plunge ever lower with each passing episode. I would have liked it if she were the big bad for even part of the season’s arc, but since she’s technically Regina… well… let’s just say it’s complicated. Her heaving bosoms were matched later in the season with the introduction of the insanely handsome Gideon (Giles Matthey), who really should have been given a meatier role in the story.

The musical episode was oddly moving, not so much because of the music, but because of the beats and themes of the episode – the fear of death (essentially FOMO) was something that resonated with me. Or rather, the fear that we will not have the time to do all the things that matter to us. The Evil Queen’s song was a little strange, admittedly, and I don’t think they pulled it off as well as they thought they did.

And then there’s the Black Fairy. She seemed like some sort of omnipotent foe at first, and I thought that it was amazing to have a villain more powerful than Hades. But… she kept getting nerfed as the series progressed. Then there was the whole thing about her being the source of all dark magic – luckily it was only a short scene, because it really didn’t jive with the previous season’s tale of the Holy Grail. Jaime Murray did do a magnificent job of portraying her and giving her so many different dimensions though, so I did ultimately like her characterisation.
ONCE UPON A TIME – “Mother’s Little Helper” – Gold and Belle convince Emma to help Gideon, explaining that together they can stop the Black Fairy. Henry experiences a disorienting shift in his powers that forces Regina to seek counsel from the previous Author. Meanwhile, in Fairy Tale Land, Hook attempts to win the assistance of an old adversary by betting his most prized possession on a game of cards. And, in a flashback, the Black Fairy tortures young Gideon in hopes of molding him into the perfect apprentice, on “Once Upon a Time,” SUNDAY, APRIL 9 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. It was a fun season, though not as epic as the previous. I think that Season 6 of Once Upon A Time was as good a finale season as any, so it’s worth watching. And the way the last episode ended… I thought I wasn’t going to catch Season 7, but that last scene changed my mind. Maybe I will finish Once Upon A Time properly after all!

Back in Storybook, Regina works to break the sleeping curse that David and Snow are under, and Gold denies The Black Fairy, which brings the two of them to a fearsome impasse.
