[Games] 10 things I’d like in the Final Fantasy 7 remake

Words cannot describe my joy at a Final Fantasy 7 remake. Well, I’d prefer they remade Final Fantasy 4 but they did give us Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, which I still haven’t played, so OK. I’d also like a Final Fantasy 5 remake while we are on this fantasy train. It gave us funny minigames, pet rearing, super bosses, the first significantly different magic system, officially named Limit Breaks (but Final Fantasy 6 had them first), and overpowered summoned monsters.

Since we’re all salivating at the thought of Omnislashing the Emerald Weapon (but conveniently forgetting the tedious task that is raising a Gold Chocobo), here’s what I’m hoping to see in the Final Fantasy 7 remake.

1)A more physically powerful Aeris

Remember how Aeris came in the back row by default? So her already weak attacks were halved in power, but it’s not that her magical ability was so much better as to compensate for the non-existent physical damage output. Even putting her in the front didn’t help all that much. And in a party of 3, if you’ve got one party member who can’t deal damage without using MP, that’s a lot of damage output you’re missing out on. How about an Aeris who has higher Strength (but still retaining her Magic scores)? That’d be awfully useful (and not game breaking).

2)Being able to get Aeris’ final Limit Break without jumping through so many hoops

Since Aeris is going to d** in the game, getting her final Limit Break was a chore. Your characters probably only have their Level 2 Limit Breaks, and given how you earn your Limit Breaks (by the number of enemies killed, IIRC), you would need to devote significant effort to letting Aeris kill things and hence, gaining her Limit Breaks. Bad enough that we lose a character that we invest so much time in, could we at least see her final Limit Break (easily) before she goes? Please?

3)Cait Sith to have better Limit Breaks

Speaking of which, Cait Sith had really lousy Limit Breaks. Could he have proper ones in this remake, rather than that whole lucky dice/roulette thing? I know he’s a robot and all, but still, there’s so much potential in that. Imagine a Cait Sith version of “Proton Cannon!”

4)Fighting Sapphire Weapon

Remember how Sapphire Weapon died? Via a Shinra cannon fired at its face. While you could fight Diamond Weapon & Emerald Weapon & Ruby Weapon & Ultima Weapon, someone else came in and killed Sapphire Weapon for you. I’d love a chance to fight Sapphire Weapon, before he gets annihilated by that cannon, and before he kills Rufus Shinra – which I’ll get to in a bit.

5)Fighting Rufus Shinra one last time

Erm yes I know he wasn’t really killed, since he’s back in Advent Children. But I’d like to be the one who conclusively defeats Rufus Shinra and takes down the Shinra Corporation. I’d like to have one final fight with him, just to give some closure to this whole thing, rather than just that solo fight early on in the game where he escapes.

6)Fight the Knights of the Round (and learn more about their backstory)

They were a cool summon, but I’d like to have gotten more information about them and how they came to be. Even cooler, I’d like to have been able to battle them in what would be a pretty epic boss fight. Or a super boss fight, for that matter. Imagine fighting all thirteen Knights at one go! That’d tax whatever system you’re playing on to its limits.

7)Being able to get a Master Independent Materia

Depending on how you got all those stat boosting items and grinded, a Master Independent Materia would not have been that useful to you. But then, imagine getting immense boosts to your stats with a Master Independent Materia! I understood why the blue Support Materia couldn’t have a Master version (that would be game breaking, I suppose), but why not the purple Materia?

8)Fighting superboss versions of the Weapons and Jenova

OK I’ve posted this on Facebook too, but I’d love to fight a superboss version of Jenova. Especially since Jenova comes with her own battle theme, and her design aesthetic is incredibly alien as well. The Weapons, well, yes, we have Ruby Weapon and Sapphire Weapon as superbosses – but how about a super-superboss, like the Titanium Weapon or the Adamant Weapon?

9)Having to travel shorter distances on the Gold Chocobo

You had to rear the Gold Chocobo in order to get the best stuff in the game, which was… OK, not as bad as dodging 200 lightning bolts, I suppose. But the thing is that you then had to travel halfway across the planet on the running speed of a Gold Chocobo, which was again another tedious task once you were accustomed to airship speeds. How about placing all the inaccessible islands 10-20 seconds away from the Chocobo Island? They’d still be inaccessible, but not as tiring to get to once you had a Gold Chocobo.

10)A really powerful Bahamut

Bahamut had three forms, to accommodate the different levels of play (and to give you more Bahamuts). But then thing is that Bahamut ZERO, his final form, wasn’t all that powerful (because Knights of the Round existed) for the animation length. Also, I distinctly recall that Hades was much more useful thanks to all the negative status effects it would inflict.
