When the Turtles receive a distress call from Leatherhead, Mikey leaps headfirst into Dimension X, prompting the other Turtles to follow him! But in a world were the laws of physics don’t apply, can the Turtles foil the Kraang’s invasion plot and make it back to our world in time?
“Into Dimension X!” is the 24th episode of Season 2 of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It finally features a full-fledged expedition to Dimension X, the home dimension of the Kraang! Not only that, we get to see the various monsters and inhabitants of Dimension X, and a fair bit of scenery too. We got a glimpse of Dimension X in the mid-season two-parter, but this is the whole shebang!
Returning characters include Leatherhead and Traag, and a Rock Soldier recolour – Granitor! Sadly the duo don’t appear for too long, so it means we might never get a Traag and Granitor toy. Sobs. The Kraang Walker also doesn’t appear, but then again it might be too overpowering for the Turtles.
Highlights
Dimension X Mikey
I cannot overstate how awesome Mikey is in this episode. For some reason, the Dimension X atmosphere affects him differently, and he gains several levels of awesome (that he loses at the end of the episode, sadly). He’s effectively more powerful than the other Turtles, and knows Dimension X like the back of his hand after staying in it for a few months.
Also it could potentially mean a new toy! If Mikey gets two new outfit changes every season, we could actually have a box set featuring all the different Mikey costumes. There’s Turflytle Mikey, and now Dimension X Mikey. What next?
And imagine the cool accessories that would come with the Dimension X Mikey toy! All sorts of ridiculous awesome ala the 80’s toy accessories. Random bugs and insects reimagined as weapons and such. And his removable Dimension X mask. We could even have a Rocktopus bait as an accessory too!
Dimension X
Dimension X has this Super Mario Galaxy feel, in the way that all gravity is relative to whatever they are standing on. This leads to funky situations like them being chased across a very small planet by a very large insect, kind of like several Super Mario Galaxy boss battles.
Time runs differently in Dimension X too – a few months there might be seconds here. It’s yet to be determined if it’s a fixed ratio or it’s like Narnia’s version of “as much time passes as is necessary for the plot” type of difference, but it explains a key point of the Kraang plot – they’ve been working on this for centuries. That’s why they have the resources and know-how to engineer a second invasion in less than a year (and possibly build a new Technodrome!).
End of Super Robo Mecha Force Five!
We didn’t get to see how Super Robo Mecha Force Five ends, but hey at least that series ends with a foreshadowing of how Season 2 will end! There’s also a meta moment where Mikey seemingly breaks the fourth wall and addresses the audience – but rather than let it go on for too long, the writers choose to have it segue nicely into the next part of the scene.
Letdowns
Traag and Granitor
I like Traag and Granitor, but we didn’t see too much of them. Worst of all, they were defeated quite easily. It’s sad to see that they’ve been reduced to mooks (from being incredible boss battles last Season). To make things worse, the final battle in this episode is against a horde of Kraang. Wouldn’t Traag and Granitor have been a better concluding battle for the Turtles?
“Into Dimension X” is a good episode that sets up everything for the final two episodes, where the Kraang invades. It also provides the Turtles with a much needed ally, Leatherhead. Hopefully Metalhead makes a return in the season finale, and then it’ll be the Turtle army against the Kraang in the next episode!
