[Transformers] ‘G2 Onslaught’ has a friendly disco feel

G2 Onslaught is the recolour of Onslaught, who is the leader of the Combaticons. This makes G2 Onslaught the leader of the G2 Decepticons. He’s a retool of Hotspot, and transforms into an anti-aircraft truck. He becomes the torso of Bruticus, and nope, you can’t really swap him out to be a limb of any sort. He’s not to be confused with the Marvel supervillain fusion of Magneto and Professor X. He has a bright yellow deco, along with the purple camouflage markings that look more and more like purple blobs, partly because the yellow is so bright.

He’s available as part of the G2 Bruticus box set that retails for SGD$199.90, and he was launched on 15 June. G2 Bruticus is the last of the G2 combiner recolours, unless a G2 Defensor one appears! Thanks Hasbro for G2 Bruticus!

Alternate Mode

Onslaught has many strong colours as an anti-aircraft truck – the blacks and yellows create a strong contrast, and the purple camouflage prints are even more stark on him than any other Combaticon. Thanks to the combination of colours, he’s the very definition of neon. As a result he has this disco feel to him, meaning that he wouldn’t be out of place at a rave. Well, as far as a giant transforming anti-aircraft truck wouldn’t be out of place, that is.

He’s a little bit elongated for my liking, but that’s a result of the mould rather than the colouration. He could do with a bit more girth in robot mode, rather than this long skinny truck. Also, compared to the other Combaticons, he doesn’t scale all that well.

Robot Mode

In robot mode, there’s almost nothing that breaks up his bright yellow deco. It makes for a really solid block of gold, and doesn’t look like something Onslaught would find himself decked out in everyday. In fact, it’s in robot mode that G2 Onslaught looks more like a recolour, because it’s not likely that this would his default paint job if he were first created as a toy.

I prefer to give G2 Onslaught his guns to field, although officially he’s supposed to keep them on his backpack. But then I like more Transformers to be more heavily armed. Your mileage may vary on this though. Given that he’s so bright, he does need a little something to make himself more intimidating. Otherwise he looks too friendly.

His guns are more detailed than the regular ones, but then he’s a Voyager Class Transformer after all. Nothing special about his weapons, except that they are integrated into his vehicle mode, so you don’t have to worry about storage in vehicle mode. Why would you keep G2 Onslaught in vehicle mode anyway? Wouldn’t he be in his combined form as Bruticus?

Comparisons

It’s no contest. I’d go with the original Onslaught. He looks more imposing and his colours don’t make him look like he could be your friend. I mean, G2 Onslaught would be a ruthless Special Teams Leader, but it’s just as likely that he’d be your preschooler’s friend.

G2 Onslaught could really be the Shattered Glass version of Onslaught, if there were one. He’d be a friendly, heroic Decepticon. He fits in with his fellow G2 Combaticons though.
