[Toy Review] “Kylo Ren Voice Changer Helmet” is surprisingly detailed

Being a Sith Lord is tough. If you’re not played by an already famous actor, then you’ll need to find some unique headgear to instill fear in your enemies. Just take a look at Darth Maul, Darth Vader, and now Kylo Ren. Emulating said Sith Lords are difficult too unless you have their helmets easily available.

And that’s where this new helmet comes in! It’s no longer a kids toy, now that it comes under the Black Series label. It comes packaged in a gorgeous box that’s aimed at collectors, and is covered with pictures of the helmet of evil within.

The packaging also shows the helmet from different angles, probably to make up for the fact that there’s no plastic window for you to see the actual item. In a way, the box is as much a collectible as the actual helmet is.

And the back of the box has the usual write up and additional pictures on it. You’ll need batteries to power the helmet, which doesn’t come included. Remember to remove the batteries if you’re not using the helmet to prevent battery leakage.

Just to show you how large the helmet is, it comes disassembled and also on its side. When it’s assembled, the helmet no longer fits into the box again (just in case you were thinking of using it for storage).

So there are three parts to the helmet (which fit together and come apart quite easily, actually). The mask, the back of the helmet, and the straps. They click together quite firmly, and aren’t difficult to pull apart either.

So this is what the inside of the helmet looks like. You can see where your voice filters through the voice changing component. The visor doesn’t restrict your vision like other helmets, so you can still see where you’re going, and even text while you’re wearing the helmet.

So here’s the left of the helmet. There’s a lot of dents and scratches on the helmet in true Star Wars fashion, to show that it’s actually been through use and adding a touch of realism to the headgear.

The helmet does look odd when you look at it straight on from the front. In fact, this is the only angle where the helmet looks odd. Probably because there’s no hood over it, since in all his appearances thus far he comes with a black hood over his helmet.

The right side of the helmet has a different set of dent and scratches on it, and also the button for the voice changing function.

And here you have the back of the helmet. You can tell Kylo Ren has been attacked from behind quite a few times, only to be saved because his helmet is pretty awesome. It probably won’t hold up to an actual attack, however.

Here’s a closer look at one of the dents. You can tell that the helmet was originally silver, and it’s painted over in black (rather than being made from some mysterious black material). It’s also contoured the way a dent would be, adding to the realism.

Even the front of the helmet has some dings, which also makes sense given that Kylo Ren has probably been in quite a number of fights.

And here’s where you press the button for the voice changer function. It’s located on the side of the helmet, which is a little difficult to find if you’ve already got the helmet on.

It’s definitely made for adults (I can hear all of you cheering already) because my head fits snugly into it. You can loosen the default size of the straps, or if your head is really that large you can remove the straps altogether, and the helmet can still fit. It’s also not as warm and stuff as other voice changer helmets are.

The Kylo Ren Voice Changer Helmet retails for SGD $129.90. It’s as much of a display piece as it is an actual cosplaying item. Also, you’ll probably want to keep the box, seeing how beautifully it’s been designed. So the question now is — will you succumb to The Dark Side?
