[Television] Shows coming to Singapore in October: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Haters Back Off!, Chef and more

Every month, we’ll tell you about new television shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore! We’ll also highlight shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.

Overview of October shows

While September gave us Luke Cage, October sees DC coming back in full force with “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”! Halloween is also upon us, meaning that Thrill has all the “Nightmare on Elm Street” movies waiting for you, while other channels have an assortment of horror waiting up. If you’re into food, then Japanese drama “The Chef” will have you going out to even more fusion restaurants like Ma Maison for your French-Japanese cusuine.

Haters Back Off! on Netflix (14 Oct)

Based on the character created by Colleen Ballinger, Haters Back Off delves into the oddball family life of Miranda Sings. Sings, an incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise, continues to fail upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous, it’s just no one knows it yet. The series stars Colleen Ballinger as Miranda Sings, Steve Little (Eastbound & Down) as Miranda’s overly confident and utterly misguided Uncle Jim, Angela Kinsey (The Office) as Miranda’s mom, Bethany, and Erik Stocklin, as Miranda’s neighbor and best friend, Patrick.

A protagonist that’s described as “failing upward”? Deadpan British comedy? A show that even Netflix describes as “bizarre”? Finally, we get to see a comedy that shows us what a musical would be like in real life — with people who can’t sing! It’s not just the unflappable confidence of Miranda Sings (Colleen Ballinger) that we’ll be amused with, but how her loved ones gently but firmly tell her that nope, you can’t achieve your dreams.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow on Warner TV (StarHub Ch 515 and Singtel Ch 306) (14 Oct, Fri 9.00 pm)

In the year 2166, the immortal villain Vandal Savage is on the verge of his final victory – total chaos and the utter destruction of humanity. As the world crumbles, the Time Master Rip Hunter takes matters into his own hands; he travels 150 years into the past to assemble a carefully selected team of heroes and rogues, who together will be… Legends.

If you loved Suicide Squad, then you’ll be happy to hear that a new team of supervillains will appear in Season 2 of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” — the Legion of Doom! It definitely won’t be a “Superfriends” kind of conflict that we’ll see in the show though, not if Malcolm Merlyn and the Reverse-Flash are going to be part of it. Plus, we’ll also be seeing the Justice Society of America appearing in this new season. DC fans, rejoice!

The Chef on Viu (14 Oct)

Hoshino Mitsuko (Amami Yuki) is the talented three-star chef of famous French restaurant, La Cuisine de La reine, in Ginza, Tokyo. She has drawn attention not just from Japan but also the world for the new recipes she continuously conceives with her delicate palate and unrivalled creativity. Gourmands around the world visit the restaurant for her cuisine and there is a three-year wait for reservations. Mitsuko has absolute confidence that there is no one in this world who will not finish her food. But one day, trouble occurs between Mitsuko and the restaurant owner Shinoda Shogo (Koizumi Kotaro) and she is fired. She has difficulty finding a new restaurant due to Shinoda’s interference and her over-inflated pride, and ends up creating school lunches for a popular variety programme by the hotshot producer Yaguchi Saki (Tomochika). It was believed to be something easy for Mitsuko, but she meets many obstacles and keeps failing. Moreover, this is aired on TV and made known to the world. Even so, Mitsuko does not give up and starts to create school lunches in order to hear children say her food is delicious and also regain her lost stars.

The amazing thing about Japanese food is that it’s almost impossible to have a bad Japanese dish, thanks in part to the combination of flavours and the steadfast dedication to quality that the Japanese have. Now, apply that to French food, dramatise it in a TV show, and add quirky Japanese humour to it. You’ll have a show that has you drooling and laughing. I mean, look at that sizzling meat in the trailer!
