Every month, we’ll tell you about new television shows to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore! We’ll also highlight shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.

Overview of July’s shows

More US series are available as the new season begins for several shows. Viu introduces Hong Kong content through Viu Original, which you can still watch on their regular site and app. But what we’re really excited for this month is the seventh season of “Game of Thrones”. All else pales in comparison.

The Bride of Habaek
tvN (Singtel TV 518, StarHub TV Channel 824): 4 July, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9.45pm)
Viu: 6 July

The God of Water, Habaek (Nam Joo-hyuk) comes to the human realm in hopes of retrieving a stone that proves him as an heir of the King of the Land of Water. He lands at Seoul, Korea and meets his servant, So-ah (Shin Se-kyung) a psychiatrist in the human realm. He keeps following her and ordering her around, while So-ah tries very hard to escape from her role as his servant. However, his obsession for her grows day by day. Their funny interaction creates even more anticipation for audience towards the drama.

Gods? Royalty? Love? I mean, what more can you ask for from a drama? Adapted from a Korean Manhwa of the same name, it looks like Korea is following Japan’s footsteps in adapting popular comic series to live action television. With an interesting premise and promising interactions, “The Bride of Habaek” looks to be one of the more interesting Korean offerings this month.

Castlevania (7 July)
Netflix

A vampire hunter fights to save a besieged city from an army of otherworldly beasts controlled by Dracula himself. Inspired by the classic video games.

With the recent release of the NES Classic Edition, which allows you to play the first and second Castlevania games, we finally get to see Simon Belmont in animated form! Well, not really, he first appeared as a vain buffoon on “Captain N: The Game Master” in the 90’s, which was quite a disservice to the character. “Castlevania” looks like it’ll show us why only Simon Belmont can defeat Dracula, and hopefully we’ll get to see fan favourite character Alucard appear as well.

Game of Thrones (Season 7) (19 July, Mondays 9am and 9pm)
HBO (StarHub TV Ch 601)

Based on the popular book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, HBO Original series GAME OF THRONES returns for its seven-episode seventh season this July. This hit Emmy®-winning fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent kingdom.

Winter may never come to Singapore, but it’s in Westeros. They even delayed the shoot so that they could replicate the look of winter in their sets. By now, we’re pretty certain that some characters aren’t going to die (at least, not until the final season), but you never know. And that’s where the excitement of “Game of Thrones” lies, isn’t it? You never know who’s going to die next.

Margaret & David: Ex (Season 2) (17 July)
Viu

Before Margaret and David met, they walked on very different paths in life. David was working at a wine importer, and had an ordinary love life until he became attracted to the mysterious secretary and uncovered a big secret. On the other end, Margaret had just returned to Hong Kong with her boyfriend after graduation, and started to have plans on marriage. However, she fell in love with a bad-boy DJ at first sight, and made a decision that would change her life.

There aren’t any trailers yet for “Margaret & David: Ex”, but this prequel will show us just how Margaret and David came to be in “Margaret & David: Green Beans”. Best of all, you can binge watch everything at one go since “Margaret & David: Green Beans” will already be out. Will you watch the series, then the prequel? Or will you watch it in chronological order? It’s up to you.

The Last Tycoon (28 July)
Amazon Prime Video

The Last Tycoon follows Hollywood’s Golden Boy, Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer, White Collar)  as he battles father figure and boss, Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer, Frasier) for the soul of their studio. In a world darkened by the Great Depression and the growing international influence of Hitler’s Germany, The Last Tycoon illuminates the passions, violence, and towering ambition of 1930’s Hollywood.

If you’re a fan of how America was presented in “The Great Gatsby”, “The Last Tycoon” looks to be more of the same decadence. The original novel was actually unfinished when Fitzgerald passed away, and it was his friend who helped him to complete and publish it. “The Last Tycoon” may be set in the 30’s, but it looks like Hollywood was just as cutthroat then as it is now.
