[Movies] 16 films to look forward to in 2016

2016 is shaping up to be an amazing year for movies. With so many sequels, prequels and adaptations, it looks like every month will bring in a blockbuster! So let’s take a look at what’s in store in 2016.

1)Fifty Shades of Black

How did it take this long for a “Fifty Shades of Grey” parody movie to appear? With Marlon Wayans helming the film and so much rich fodder to mock from the original film, you know “Fifty Shades of Black” is going to be tickling you with its dark humour.

2)Kung Fu Panda 3

It’s Po – times a 100! We finally get to solve the mystery of Po’s parentage after being teased for two movies with Li Shan as his father. But the most gratifying aspect of the film is to see Po as a martial arts teacher — it shows us just how much Po has grown since his first movie.

3)Deadpool

We finally get to see a proper Deadpool (and not, you know, some mouthless bandaged guy with sword arms) in action! He even gets to mouth off against characters who could easily crush his skull (but then he can regenerate so it’s not that bad). And we’ll be getting some Colossus action too!

4)Zoolander No. 2

It’s the return of Blue Steel, that look which coincidentally also resembles the duck face in so many selfies. We’ve waited over a decade for this sequel, which sees our favourite himbo model Derek Zoolander posing for the camera again. But it’s been 15 years since the first movie — does Ben Stiller still have what it takes?

5)Gods of Egypt

It’s another fantasy epic that’s been lambasted for whitewashing an Egyptian cast. Yet, there’s a certain allure to seeing such mythological sagas playing out on the big screen. It’s a refreshing change to see the ancient gods of another culture besides overexposed Greece on screen in the new year!

6)London Has Fallen

There’s just something cathartic about seeing famous landmarks being subject to wanton destruction. “London Has Fallen” doesn’t just promise us action and adventure, but also the decimation of London icons. What more could you ask for in an action film?

7)Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman! Superman! Wonder Woman! Aquaman! Lex Luthor! Doomsday! All in the same film! It’s a geek’s dream come true, but what makes it even more exciting is that we’ll be seeing a team up of all these characters, a proto-Justice League that’ll lead up to the actual Justice League movie! And come on, don’t we all want to see how Batman holds his own against Superman?

8)The Angry Birds Movie

Who’d have thought that a silly game of catapulting irate fowl against unsuspecting swine would have led to an animated movie today? What we’re looking forward to, though, aren’t just the animated representations of our avian ammunition, but how they’re going to be flinging themselves at the Pigs.

9)X-Men: Apocalypse

After the amazing hit that was “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” all eyes are on “X-Men: Apocalypse” to see if it can continue the successful reboot of the “X-Men” series. Will the X-Men unite and be able to defeat one of the most powerful mutants of all time?

10)Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

What makes the Ninja Turtles so popular is the colourful supporting cast that they have. And here, we get to see two fan favourite villains finally come to life on the big screen! With Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter Stockman, Karai and Casey Jones joining the cast, and possible hints of the Technodrome appearing, it’s going to be a veritable mutant bonanza in this sequel!

11)Warcraft

All those beautifully animated cinematics in Warcraft have finally paid off in an actual live-action Warcraft movie! We get to see the Horde and the Alliance clashing in an epic confrontation of might and magic in this film. And if we’re lucky, we might even get sneak peaks of the Night Elves and the Undead!

12)Ghostbusters

It’s all new batch of female Ghostbusters in this 2016 movie! With seasoned comedians in this new Ghostbusting team, it’s only a few months before we see how they hold up the mantle of being Ghostbusters in this movie. Thank goodness we didn’t have that “Hell in New York” storyline…

13)Star Trek Beyond

The third Star Trek movie reunites the new generation of the Enterprise crew. Even though there are precious few details about this new film, we do know that the Starship Enterprise’s destruction is imminent. Does that mean our heroes will be getting a newer, more powerful starship?

14)Suicide Squad

With a character as insane as the Joker as one of the protagonists, it’s hard to imagine “Suicide Squad” being anything but fun to watch. The other villains in the team might not be as famous as the Joker, but it’s safe to say that bringing these many psychopaths together will definitely make for interesting dynamics.

15)Doctor Strange

As one of the most esoteric Marvel characters, “Doctor Strange” promises to be a colourful and mystical romp through a side of the Marvel Universe that has thus far been unseen in the movies. And with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the Sorcerer Supreme, “Doctor Strange” promises to be full of weird, wacky goodness.

16)Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Most of us won’t be able to journey across continents to watch the new Harry Potter play, so the next best way to get our Harry Potter fix will be with the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” It’ll be a nostalgic and interesting return to the Harry Potter universe, especially since this takes place in a decidedly non-British environment.

But what about Captain America: Civil War?

Honestly, I’m not looking forward to this instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It looks like unnecessary angst between Iron Man and Captain America. And come on, with Vision, War Machine and Iron Man on the same team, how will Cap’s team possibly win?

So what films are you looking forward to in 2016?
