We’ve not seen a “Wonder Woman” trailer yet – so here’s the next best thing, our first glimpse at footage for the 2017 “Wonder Woman” movie! It reinforces the differences between cinematic Wonder Woman and comic Wonder Woman, particularly her powers and Themyscira. It’s another origin story (but it has to be, since it’s her first solo outing) with a period twist.
So what are the highlights of this “Wonder Woman” teaser?
Emphasis on Wonder Woman’s martial skills over her super powers
The constant emphasis on Wonder Woman’s combat abilities seems to indicate that it will probably be her schtick in the film, given that “she’s the best fighter in the DC universe.” Well, Lady Shiva or Prometheus would have better fighting techniques, but then they’re probably not going to appear in the DC Extended Universe. Still, given that Wonder Woman’s definitely got some measure of super strength and speed here, it probably increases her combat prowess too.
Notably, though, is that Wonder Woman isn’t shown flying, nor does she have her invisible airplane. Will this Wonder Woman be more earthbound? If so, how did she leave the island of Themyscira?
Heavy use of her sword and shield
While Wonder Woman’s traditional weapon was her Lasso of Truth in comics and on television, but the footage we’ve seen shows her wielding a sword and shield in almost all her battle scenes. In fact, her shield is powerful enough to protect her from Doomsday’s heat vision in the “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” trailers! They’re probably forged by Hephaestus, or at the very least, magical.
The Amazons were meant to protect man?
The Amazons “were once created to protect Man’s world, but has since abandoned it.” This hints at a much deeper, interconnected history with the rest of the world, while in the comics, the Amazons were perfect women shaped from clay that didn’t necessarily have to protect mankind (although in the New 52, they’re just normal women who live in an exclusively female society). In fact, they form their own nation of sorts. It could mean a very different dynamic and attitude towards males, and it’ll be interesting to see how exactly they sustain their population in this rendition.
Horse riding
Wonder Woman rides a lot of horses here! Perhaps it goes well with the sword and shield, and evokes the idea of a latter day female knight. We’re probably going to see an extended horseback battle set piece, as hinted by the footage, and possibly a horse race between Wonder Woman and her nemesis.
Where’s the villain?
It’s still early, but there’s no sign of the villain that Wonder Woman will eventually face off against. And given that it looks like the film takes place in the 1900s, there’s very little that could actually hurt Wonder Woman, unless her invulnerability has been toned down for the film. Hopefully, it’s a formidable villain like Hades or Ares, rather than someone like Cheetah.
Will the 1900s even be a threat to Wonder Woman? Or will her conflict be more ideological than physical? We’ll just have to wait until 2017 to find out!
